I'm a Head of Performing Arts and music specialist with a great love for technology and a passion for the flipped learning concept. My first 'Virtual Textbook' (a series of student-friendly videos with matching homework tasks) has been so successful that I am now seeking to branch out into BTEC courses and other GCSE boards. I welcome contact and/or feedback about any of my projects and also enjoy collaboration with other professionals.

KS3 Music Keyboard Complete SoL - Part 2 - Timeline

(0)
This resource contains over 35 lessons and builds on the work started by part 1 of our KS3 SoL: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/ks3-music-complete-keyboard-sol-part-1-notation-12285719 The SoL uses a number of history’s most important musical pieces to teach pupils about genre, style, performer, composers and songwriters as well as giving them the chance to sample each piece in a practical way. Every stop on the timeline includes listening (with YouTube videos embedded in the PowerPoint and Kahoot quizzes linked in) and a small selection from the sheet music, all marked up to aid with assessment. This resource also includes a number of wall displays that help to introduce the elements of music along the way and links directly to our popular timeline display: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/musical-timeline-display-11968959 Please note that this resource is best viewed in Google Slides - the link can be found in the PowerPoint.

OCR GCSE Music (9-1 Spec) Area of Study 3 - Rhythms of the World 'Virtual Textbook' Resources

(2)
This is a scheme of learning to help students learn about Area of Study 3 - Rhythms of the World on the new 9-1 OCR GCSE Music specification. The listening paper is usually found to be the most difficult part of the exam and is now 40% of the qualification. The scheme is based around a ‘virtual textbook’ - a YouTube playlist available for free: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNeHS3oeH242gKpGrZAA-xvafcIOjjpw6 APRIL 2018 - due to the success of the virtual textbook, it has been necessary to move the videos out to their own bespoke YouTube channel. All resources have been updated so that links and QR codes are correct. The old videos/playlist will no longer be maintained and may disappear. The resources for each video are: Homework flipped-learning worksheet (these include the links and QR codes to the correct video so students can access the work) Exemplar completed homework worksheet Exam question (at least one for each video) Exam question mark scheme Exemplar answer for those questions that involve extended writing PLC for each topic Stickers so that students can stick the links in their books for revision Matching Kahoot quiz links Please note - Nearly all of the videos contain copyrighted material, the use of this material is within YouTube’s copyright guidelines but does mean that some videos are DISABLED ON MOBILE DEVICES. My YouTube channel is NOT monetised. All PowerPoint files were created on PowerPoint for Mac, this can result in some formatting issues which are easily corrected - a PDF version is supplied for printing.

BTEC First Award in Music - Unit 1 Personal Learning Checklists (PLC) and Analysis Tool

(1)
Personal Learning Checklists for unit 1 of the BTEC First Award in Music. PLCs provide an excellent focus for students to assess their own knowledge prior to exams so that they can target their own revision. They also provide an excellent opportunity for reflection after mock exams. The specification for unit 1 has been broken down into student-friendly statements and each has a simple RAG (red, amber, green) tick box next to it for students to evaluate their knowledge. The language of the statements is based around the BTEC terminology of describe, explain and analyse. Students should complete all or part of the PLC on a regular basis, there is also a student analysis document (with a Guns 'n' Roses theme - we are studying the music industry after all!) to enable them to analyse their strengths and weaknesses and so target their future work and revision. The resources are supplied in two formats - PowerPoint and PDF. The PowerPoint file was created on a Mac, which may create some formatting issues for PC users. The PowerPoint is shared to enable to teachers to tweak the content, but please always remember the source. There are some specialised fonts employed, details of these are in the PowerPoint notes. The PDF version is ready for printing.

This activity is designed to be used through the flipped learning model. For homework, students are asked to watch the video, which gives an overview of the topic area in an engaging and memorable way. Students then complete the exam-style questions (which are arranged into section A and section B/C-style questions). Mark schemes are provided to enable self/peer marking the following lesson. ‘Guilt’ sheets are included, which have been completed but also contain errors. This means that any learner that hasn’t done their homework for whatever reason can still engage with feedback and assessment tasks. At least one Socrative quiz can also be accessed through links on the resource. If you’re not using Socrative, it’s absolutely brilliant for multiple choice and short answer quizzing. The resources are presented as both a PowerPoint and a PDF. Full playlist of all videos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BPdmaa5c3g&list=PLNeHS3oeH2407BRHJRpaWBaEfCdeHzxcg

Circle of Fifths Wall Display

(0)
This circle of fifths wall display is designed to present the concept simply. Each key has its own poster so that they can be easily arranged. There is the traditional ‘major on the outside’ and ‘minor on the inside’ approach, with hi res images of the key signatures. Th display is presented as a PowerPoint file (to enable editing or tweaking), a PDF and as JPEG files. All of the slides can be seen in the preview section. PLEASE NOTE - 7 sharp/flat keys are omitted deliberately to keep the display uniform and simple. It is aimed at GCSE-level students, whom I would suggest should be discouraged from composing in 7 sharps/flats!
