Two engaging and ready to teach lessons to introduce students to context to prepare them to study the main themes in ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne. Lesson overviews, printing instructions and worksheets are all included. This resource includes a Powerpoint presentation for 2 one-hour lessons (although in the past I have spread this over more lessons if required). For research, students can either use devices to access the Internet, but if this is not available I have included a pdf document which includes 16 sources that students can use for their research in class. The topics included in this lesson are: Auschwitz The Jewish ghettos The Final Solution Hitler and anti-Semitism The night of broken glass LESSON ONE Learning Objective: Identify strong sources of information to complete research about the Holocaust. Learning Outcomes: Bronze: Identify a reliable source of information about my topic. Silver: Write down my research in my own words. Gold: Find multiple reliable sources of information. Teaching activities: Do it now: Students complete first column of KWL grid about the Holocaust Starter: Think, pair, share: discussion of what makes a reliable source. Activity 1: How do we take effective notes? Activity 2: Research and completing scaffolding notes sheet. Peer assessment Plenary: Students complete the L section of their KWL grid. This is a home learning workbook that contains 20 lessons that are a mixture of live and independent work from home. This is aimed at students studying The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (play by Simon Stephens) for Edexcel English Literature IGCSE 4ET1. This also works well as a revision guide for students to work through independently. This workbook has 12 live lessons for delivery in class or online (I have delivered them all online) and 8 for independent home learning. It would be easy to adapt lessons to make them live or independent. This resource is an adaptation of my original Curious Incident lesson bundle available here. This resource includes: A Powerpoint workbook with 175 slides which covers 20 lessons. Students complete all of their work directly into the Powerpoint (I have found that this saves a lot of stress and time when students have all of their work in one place). An overview of the scheme of work. A video that simulates the feeling of sensory overload Christopher experiences in the train station (this is embedded within the Powerpoint, but I have added it here in case there are problems). Two engaging and detailed lessons to teach students how to approach the narrative writing question in Language paper 2 of CIE 0500 English Language IGCSE. This resource contains a ready-to-teach powerpoint with printing and teaching instructions. The first lesson covers structure and the students are guided towards completing a planning sheet for their story which includes hook, characterisation, development, climax and the resolution. The second lesson asks students to consider how to write an engaging hook and then to complete their piece of narrative writing. LESSON ONE Learning Objective: Plan our narrative writing for Paper 2. Learning Outcomes: Students will understand what the narrative questions look like and what is assessed on the mark scheme. Students will be introduced to a recommended narrative structure and then will plan their own answer. Lesson Outline: Do it now: What is the difference between narrative and descriptive writing? Two clear, detailed and ready-to-teach lessons on CIE 0500 Language Paper 1 Questions 2(a)-(d) which assess explicit and implicit meanings and comprehension and analysis skills. In this resource is an original exam script with Text C as well as answers with explanations adapted from the mark scheme. Text C and the questions are included as a pdf for easy printing or as a word doc in case you wish to amend the layout (although the layout is based on the exam). All the questions and answer scheme have been based on the Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 syllabus and the questions have been worded so that they are similar/identical to the specification paper. LESSON ONE Learning Objective: Understand how to approach Q2(a)-© (analysis) of language paper 1 Learning Outcomes: Students will practise answering questions where they have to explore explicit and implicit meanings. Students will complete the short analysis question. Lesson Outline: Do it now: What does ‘analysis’ mean? Write a definition. Main task: Scaffolded mock exam – students complete questions and then they are marked as a class to identify areas for future development. 21 engaging and supportive lessons designed for home/online/virtual learning to assist students to independently read ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne. This is aimed at key stage 3 students and covers both English Language and Literature skills. I have taken my popular scheme of work on ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ and redesigned it for students to be able to work through independently from home. Therefore it is a workbook style document and students type their work straight into the Powerpoint. This is ideal for students who are home-schooled or need additional support to study the novel. This workbook comprises of 21 full one-hour lessons, and it is 225 Powerpoint slides long.
