This is an introduction to some of the women composers whose names may be less familiar than their male counterparts, despite the undoubted contribution they made. It offers a chance to find out more and begin to understand the struggles they had. It could be part of Women’s History Month, or serve to support Gatsby Benchmarks 3 and 4. This assembly highlights this year’s theme of Anxiety, how it can affect anyone and everyone, but also looking at supporting and understanding those whose circumstances mean they are more vulnerable to feelings of anxiety. It looks at how you can cope with anxiety and where to seek help if you have ongoing problems with anxiety. It will also be part of a bundle with other resources looking at situations where stress and anxiety are more prevalent, such as when facing disappointment, or in the face of exams, and areas of our lives we can work on to help improve our mental health, such as sleep, friendship and acts of kindness.

Part of preparing post 16 students for life beyond sixth form includes looking at ways to become the responsible citizens of the future. As part of this it is important that they understand the threats to the environment and how they can contribute now and as adults to exacting changes. The presentation looks at the vital role of pollinators such as bees and the threats they are undergoing as well as ways to make a change. This presentation is a complete lesson with optional discussion points, but can easily be adapted to be used for an assembly by taking them out. It outlines some of the King’s history and education, his particular interests and looks at the pomp and ceremony of the day. There are links to a couple of videos - the Crowning of his mother, giving some idea of what to expect and how to make the royal quiche. It allows opportunities to discuss the line of succession and the cost and benefits of such a momentous event, while also looking at the community events and impact. There is a worksheet to accompany the discussion.

This lesson discusses the importance of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and includes opportunities for discussion and optional videos (timings included, so you can calculate what works for your time slot). The Teaching Notes include a link to duplicate a general knowledge quiz to begin to consider the value of cultural diversity and how much is already present in students’ lives. The presentation includes further reading and finishes with a plenary to evaluate the discussion and understanding.

There is a whole world out there to see, but travel is expensive, so this lesson looks at ways of seeing the world without breaking the bank, using skills and training young people might pick up on the way and alerts them to looking out for opportunities while students. This would go well as a follow-up to a presentation on Gap Years or a talk from a colleague about their travel experiences. Osteoporosis Week comes at the beginning of June, but this could be part of PHSE at any juncture. The lesson discusses what the condition is and how it can affect the body, but also looks at preventative members and poses the question of why young people should be thinking of this/be aware now. In many ways it contributes to supporting a healthy diet and exercise regime, also highlighting the contributing factors of alcohol and smoking, eating disorders and steroid tablets. There is a quiz on Forms to introduce students to thinking about the topic and the link to duplicate is in the Teaching Notes. We want our students to go out into the world and make healthy and informed choices.

This presentation discusses the issues around Hate Crime and Disability, looking at what constitutes a disability and providing discussion points to consider various aspects of the question, including the question of advocacy and how to report or support someone experiencing such crimes. We want to prepare our students to make responsible, considered choices in the future and this Earth Day lesson includes a presentation with discussion points, optional videos and lots of food for thought. The lesson is wholly adaptable and could easily be adapted to an environment lesson and discussion for anytime in the PHSE/Citizenship/Life Skills programme. It approaches the idea of preparing for challenges and thinking about how to cope, while also exploring the fact that it is natural to have different reactions and that seeking help is a strength. This resource allows for discussion around the damage being perpetrated by hate crime on a basis of religion and allows for discussion of terms around the subject, awareness of the history of such persecution, the religious make-up of England and Wales and the opportunity to understand what can be done to make a change and the role of the law. This presentation is ideal for an assembly with Year 12 before the summer break, to remind them of the importance of taking a break, while also taking stock of Year 12 and planning to build skills, complete college work and prepare for post 18 applications. This resource is designed to coincide with World Rivers Day in September, but in recognition that this is a busy time of year could fit in with other parts of your Careers/PSHE programme. It deals with looking at careers and job sectors based around rivers and opening students up to the idea of considering their work environment and that jobs they may have considered can be applied in multiple settings.
