A fun activity to drill ‘Free time’ vocabulary whilst developing translation skills from Spanish into English. Based on the game ‘One pen One die’ (‘Games for Teaching Primary French’ by Danièle Bourdais and Sue Finnie), where pupils compete to be the first one to finish all the translations. Here is how to play: in pairs, students take turns to roll the die to decide who goes first. Whoever gets a six starts translating whilst the other person rolls the die to try and steal the pen by getting another six. When they get it, they shout ‘¡Para!’ (Stop!) and ‘steal’ the pen off their partner to start translating. The person who just lost the pen starts rolling it to get number six to steal it again. The winner is the pupil who finishes the translations first. Prompt your students to think of their translation whilst rolling the die so they are always on task! It can also be played online with a virtual die. The PowerPoint includes two differentiated worksheets on Free Time and an adaptable template too to suit the topic being studied as well as to the students’ needs and level. A while ago we had the opportunity to participate in a Webinar about the need to decolonize the curriculum and we met Maud Waret (you can find her on Twitter as @profprofmfl). Listening to her was extremely inspiring, and from that moment on have been trying to make our lessons and resources as inclusive as we can. Although we have a long way to go, from our position of privilege we strive to make all students feel represented and included. Our classes are becoming more diverse, and that is something we should celebrate. The vast majority of textbooks and resources that we know about the topic of descriptions do not include enough vocabulary to allow all students to describe themselves, their friends or their family. And that’s why we felt the need to create this resource (thanks Maud for your advice!). At the moment we only have it in Spanish, but we would like to do it in other languages as well, would you be interested? Hace un tiempo tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en un webminario sobre la necesidad de descolonizar el currículum educativo y conocimos a Maud Waret (podéis encontrarla en Twitter como @profprofmfl). Escucharla fue extremadamente inspirador, y a partir de aquel momento nos pusimos manos a la obra para intentar hacer nuestras clases y recursos más inclusivos. Aunque nos queda mucho camino por recorrer, desde nuestra posición de privilegio nos esforzamos para que todos los estudiantes se sientan representados e incluidos. La gran mayoría de libros de texto y recursos que conocemos para el tema de las descripciones no incluyen suficiente vocabulario como para permitir que los estudiantes puedan describirse a ellos mismos, a sus amigos o a sus familiares. Y de ahí surgió la necesidad de crear este recurso (¡gracias Maud por tus consejos!). De momento lo tenemos sólo en español, pero nos gustaría hacerlo en otros idiomas también, ¿te interesaría?

A board game to revise key grammar and vocabulary whilst having fun. The squares are organised according to the following categories: Grammar Vocabulary Translation False friends The teacher needs to divide the class in groups of 3-5 people and nominate someone as ‘the master’. There is a numbered answer sheet for all questions (chuleta) that the ‘master’ will use to test their classmates’ knowledge. Each number matches one card. Students roll the die and move their counter, then grab the card they have landed on and answer the question/task. If they get the question right, they stay in that square. If not, they need to go back to the previous one. There are also special squares that make pupils go forward or backwards. The winner is the person who reaches the end first. Students will need a die and counters. Un juego para repasar la gramática y el vocabulario en español mientras tus estudiantes se divierten. Cada casilla se una de las siguientes categorías: Gramática Vocabulario Traducción “Falsos amigos” El profesor divide la clase en grupos de 3 a 5 personas y nomina a una persona como “el máster”. Hay una hoja numerada con las respuestas (la chuleta) que el “máster” usará para comprobar las respuestas de sus compañeros. Cada número se corresponde con una de las tarjetas. Si dan la respuesta correcta, se quedan en esa casilla. Los estudiantes lanzan el dado y mueven su ficha, después cogen la tarjeta en la que hayan caído y responden la pregunta/tarea. Si no, tienen que volver a la anterior. También hay casillas especiales que hacen que los estudiantes avancen o retrocedan. El ganador es la persona que llegan al final primero. Los estudiantes necesitarán un dado y fichas para moverse por el tablero.
