This Phonics Screening Check is designed to give practice in phonic decoding skills. It also is an aid for the teacher to see which pupils may be in need of more support. The Phonics screening Check consists of 40 flash cards. 20 of the words are real words and 20 are non – real words. The non – real words provide the purest assessment of phonic decoding because they will be new to the children. The 20 non-real words are identified by a picture prompt of an imaginary creature and the children should be asked to name the creature. This set of 40 flash cards will help children become familiar with the way the Government Test will be presented in the ‘Year 1 Phonics Screening Test’ There are notes about administering the check and also included are individual record sheets, class record sheets for non-words and real words. Images were generated using graphics resources from Microsoft Office and are used with permission under the terms of the licence.
