This lesson draws the whole unit to a close. During the unit students will have studied the different hardware and software components that make up a computer system. You should use one lesson to set the assessment task and then use this lesson as an opportunity for Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time (DIRT). Students will understand the correct answers to the questions on the assessment, and then complete 3 targets set by the teacher in their feedback. The lesson plan is provided in .PPT, .PPTS and .PPTX format, while the learning mat or assessment sheet is provided as PPTX, PPS and PDF.

Familiarise your students with how hardware and software components integrate and interact in a computer system. The unit of work takes students on a journey of understanding of internal components of computer systems: primary memory, CPU, with secondary storage and a description of an embedded system. The unit then develops by looking at OS software, utility programs and considers the importance of developing robust software and how to identify vulnerabilities in a system. It closes by considering the differences between programming languages, and the different types of translators that are used to translate high-level code into machine code. The final lesson includes an assessment task and a lesson designed to get students to reflect on achievement and improve any gaps in understanding.

This lesson is the 3rd in a series of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding of how networks are organised. This is a ‘back to basics’ lesson that challenges students to use technical language about the internet and world wide web accurately. It also covers basic understanding of the role of the router, what a browser is, distinguishing it from a search engine. Additionally this lesson covers information about connection cables needed for the BTEC Digital Information Technology course. This lesson is provided in PPTX, PPTS, PPT formats. The learning mat is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats. Some animation and image features may be lost in PPT formats.

LO: To construct expressions involving file size, transmission rate and time for calculating network speeds. This lesson is the 6th in a series of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding of how networks are organised. In this lesson students focus on the mathematics involved in calculating network speeds, file sizes and time taken to transmit data. Students are asked to recall learning about units used for measuring file sizes. This lesson reflects on the need for accuracy and questions involve units such as MiB, GiB and TiB. This lesson is provided in PPTX, PPTS, PPT formats. The learning mat and homework sheet is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats. Some animation and image features may be lost in PPT formats.

This lesson builds on learning from the introductory lesson for this unit. In the previous lesson, students were asked to complete a homework research activity, so if you have not run this lesson you will need to delete or change this activity. The content of this lesson is a core part of the learning for the GCSE computer science course and asks students to understand that while the computer is running a program, the data and instructions need to be stored / held. You can extend students to understand that this disappears when the program stops or the computer is switched off. This lesson has been created with the Pearson Edexcel specification in mind, but is appropriate for other exam boards. Lesson plans are provided in PPTX, PPT and PPS format, while learning mats are provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats.

This lesson is the fifth in a sequence of lessons and looks at processor performance when related to clock speed, number of cores and bus speed. There are a variety of activities, but the main demonstrate phase considers the language of exams and helps students to understand how much to write in exam style questions. The learning mat (worksheet) is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS, PPT formats, though the user should note that some animation and image features lose some functionality in PPT format.
31 Secondary Storage

This is the sixth lesson in a sequence of lessons that cover Topic 3: Computers on the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Computer Science course. In this lesson students are reminded about the core model for a computer system, and discuss the need for secondary storage. They are introduced to the history of the development of secondary storage and are asked to compare the functionality, use and benefits and drawbacks of optical, magnetic and solid state storage. Lesson plans are saved in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format. The learning mat (worksheet) and starter activity are saved in PPTX, PPTS and PDF format. Note that PPT files have lost some of the functionality of the animation settings and images.

This is a busy lesson and is fourth in a sequence of lessons that consider how computer systems integrate hardware and software. In this lesson, students consider what happens in the CPU during the fetch-decode-execute process. This lesson may need to be differentiated for some classes. There is an opportunity to consider how the registers work using the little man computer model using an online model. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format although some functionality (such as the video screen grab) is lost in PPT format so the screen grab is also provided separately. The worksheet (learning mat) is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats.

This lesson is the third in a sequence of lessons that exposes students to activities that will help them understand how the different components in a computer system interact and communicate with each other. This lesson focuses on the different types of internal main memory in a computer, that are used to start up and keep the computer running. Students learn about the differences in functionality and purpose of ROM, RAM and cache memory. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format, though some functionality in the PPT file may be lost. The worksheet (learning mat) is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF format.

This lesson is the 10th in a sequence of lessons that looks at how hardware and software are integrated on a computer system. This lesson looks at the reasons why computer programmers must make sure that their programs can cope with errors and the ways that they do this. There is a significant amount of new key vocabulary in this lesson, and it would be a good idea to set a homework that asks students to reinforce the terms introduced in this lesson. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS and PPT formats, while the learning mat is available as PDF, PPTX and PPT files.
