A cross curricular SOW I wrote for my History department which worked alongside the Drama team. The pupils loved the fact they went to both subjects and explore the same topic. I have also included the first lesson. History focused on the building of the ship and the tragic events while Drama studied the passengers and Edwardian class system.
An assembly that explores feelings and our inner voice. It looks at how pupils can focus on positive thoughts and there is a challenge at the end for some pupils to try over the course of the following week.
There is also a link to an animation on Youtube.
A complete lesson which gets pupil to use their source skills to investigate an enquiry question.
- PowerPoint with targeted lesson objectives
- A worksheet with sources. Print this on A3 as the questions are also embedded.
I have used this for both an interview and for observations - succeeded in both. Pupils enjoy it too.
A superb lesson I have used for numerous observations before. It works well as it is well paced, has group work and helps pupils consolidate their knowledge at the end with some extended writing.
You need some sugar paper or plain A3 would do. Stick the picture of a Motte and Bailey castle and the Stone Keep castle on either side of the sheet prior to the lesson. A good plan of how to run the lesson is below:
Starter: A map image is displayed showing Norman castles that were built by William the Conqueror. Pupils asked questions about the map e.g. What do the locations of the castles tell you about England at the time?
New Learning: Learning objectives displayed and pupils record the relevant one for their target grade into their exercise books.
Pupils watch a short clip about Norman castles and then answer some questions about them with the aid of a PowerPoint slide.
Learning development: In pairs, use the sugar paper to explore, analyse and consider the effectiveness of Motte and Bailey and Stone castles. Afterwards, pupils stick their own versions of the castles in in their books and complete a series of levelled activities.
Plenary: Think of a 15 second sales pitch you would give William about why he should invest in each type of castle to help him control the English.
Revisit Learning Objectives: Pupils consider how/why they have met their learning objective.
A collection of resources to help you deliver a SOW on the Holocaust. Includes:
- Assessment PowerPoint's (Slightly different formats)
- Mind map worksheets for pupils to complete on the Warsaw Ghetto and the significance of the Holocaust
- Information sheet on the Final Solution
- 2 starter activities which promote discussion
All resources are editable and can be adopted to meet your departments enquiry. Many of these go with my Holocaust SOW resource also found on TES.
It never fails to amaze me how much children enjoy a good murder investigation! This lesson is an introduction to how historians 'do' history. Pupils are introduced the concept of inference during the lesson. It also has a literacy twist in that after they have investigated the murder they have to write a piece of discursive writing.
A full lesson on the government reaction to the suffragettes which includes:
Link to a clip and accompanying data capture sheet
Source exercise and resources
Easy to follow lesson objectives with a progress bar to help pupils gage their progress
A SOW of 10 lessons on the assassination of JFK and the different theories surrounding it. Also included in this pack is a few of the resources to help deliver it.
A Geography and History themed lesson on Pompeii in which pupils use a variety of resources such as animations, information sheets and eyewitness accounts to build a picture of the Vesuvius eruption in AD79.
Two assemblies about tolerance, homosexuality and normality
Assembly 1 - Uses Mussolini's WWII treatment of homosexuals to discuss tolerance
Assembly 2 - Focuses on 3 history periods to discuss how tolerance society was. Also links to Rigby murder
An assembly that looks at honesty and fairness when treating others. Includes:
- References to examples of poor guidance and how to improve this
- Talks about giving feedback in lessons and being critical
- A story that shows us how failure is easy to come across and why it is a key part of growing
- Reference to effort and guidance as keys to developing growth mindset thinking. Also links for the teacher to read in the note section
- A challenge for pupils to complete over the course of the week.
2 resources for studying the Pilgrimage of Grace:
- A two page internet worksheet to help students capture the key aspects of the event and try and compare it with others
- A sentence starter sheet for lower ability pupils to aid with extended writing
A lesson that explores the life of Jesus through key events in his life. Pupils can look at his life in chronological order and make inferences about it using quotes from the bible.
A philosophic assembly based around the question: What could you do right now that your future self would thank you for? Lots of thinking here for your pupils! Also includes references to a bucket list and then back to how pupils could make changes now in school to help them later.
A detailed SOW that includes:
- Lesson Objectives and outcomes
- Key questions to use for lessons
- Coherent sequence of lessons that build up to an assessment
- Suggested activities to use in every lesson
This is a skills unit. You can easily weave the activities into your own lessons or use it as an introductory unit at the beginning of the year.
A full SOW with objectives, overview of suggested activities and outcomes. I have also included an assessment which has been updated with Emerging/Mastery etc. assessed responses. This also includes an essay structure for pupils to use. I run this in Yr9 as a Development/Thematic unit in preparation for the SHP GCSE unit the following year on Crime or Warfare.
Aimed to be used at the end of a study of the key Cold War event. The lesson is structured as follows:
- Pupils create a mind map about what they already know about the Cuban Missile Crisis
- They then use sources (the number of which can be reduced depending on the ability of pupils) to populate the mind map during the course of the lesson. Pupils use a different colour pen for this so it clearly shows new material gleaned from the resources.
- Feedback and sharing with other members of the class. Again pupils should use another colour for this so it shows peer teaching
An assembly or presentation about Halloween that includes facts and figures from the UK and USA. Also includes:
- A look at the traditions and history of Halloween
- Ways children can stay safe
- Reference to stories, notes about Halloween (on slide notes) and links to further information to help you present it how you wish.
