Rhythm and Pulse: Dots and Boxes (Lesson 1 of 2) This lesson looks at how to read notation and rhythms using dots and boxes using the words tea, coffee and soup. Students interpret when to clap using the dots in the boxes and when to rest using blank boxes. We then build on this using the word coffee to interpret quaver beats and soup to interpret minim notes. Students then do a group performance using polyrhythms in four parts.

A lesson based around the instruments of the orchestra. The second lesson in a series. Students learn about the violin, viola, harp, cello and double bass. There is a keyboard activity using Hedwig’s theme on the keyboards.

Rhythm and Pulse - Tea, Coffee, Soup 2 This is the second lesson in the sequence. Students learn how to convert dots and boxes into musical notes and how many beats each ‘dot’ lasts for? Students then compose a four bar rhythm which then perform solo and then perform with others in a polyrhythm.

Graphic Scores and Dawn Interlude - KS3 This PowerPoint looks at how to interpret graphic scores using the piece Dawn Interlude by Benjamin Britten. The starter activity gets students to interpret which graphic image represents the sound clip. Students then analyse Dawn Interlude with a True or False activity at the end of the lesson

Rhythm and Pulse - KS3 This lesson teaches students about rhythm and pulse. The first few slides teach students about the vocabulary necessary to describe this topic. There is a rhythm matching activity with accompanying worksheet. There are opportunities for group performance and a reflection and feedback sheet.

Instruments of The Orchestra - KS3 This is the first lesson in a series titled Instruments of the Orchestra. The PowerPoint aims to help students understand the different families of the orchestra and the seating chart using the Benjamin Britten’s guide 'The Young Persons Guide To The Orchestra. The accompanying worksheets help in aiding students to describe the sections of orchestra using the piece and the seating chart tasks gets students to think about the various families of the orchestra.

Third lesson in a series about the instruments of the orchestra. This lesson studies woodwind instruments. There is an activity using straws to help students understand reeds, airflow and pitch. And exciting and useful resource.

This is a lesson teaching students the basics of Blues music, including the 12 Bar Blues. Students use a listening activity and then use keyboards or any instrument to perform a simple 12 bar blues. All worksheets are contained in the Power Point.

Topic: Rhythm and Pulse Suitable for: KS2 and KS3 This is the updated sequence of learning for the topic Rhythm and Pulse. The original version is still available in my shop. This lesson is the first in a sequence of six where students learn about Rhythm and Pulse. In this lesson, students will learn the definition of the words rhythm and pulse and try to clap a basic rhythm using dots in boxes. Students will also compose their own rhythm and watch a video of the musicians ‘STOMP’ to understand how polyrhythms are used to make music.

The second lesson in a series about Blues music. Students build on the knowledge gained in the last lesson about Blues music and the 12 bar blues. They build on this by adding a simple bass line and then a walking bass line.
