Exam question Practice A resource designed for higher level GCSE English Language students, looks at using techniques in their writing and works on developing students work so that it achieves marks for compelling and convincing communication. should last about 40 minutes

A lesson on AO1 based on Coventry. The lesson looks at AO1 with skill building for question 5, it introduces the use of techniques, lesson should last around an hour and a half. Techniques: Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Group of 3, Powerful Adjectives and Sensory Language. A good introduction for Creative writing.

A starter and main activity of about 30 minutes in time the activites get steadily harder beginning with identifying word classes and connotations and then analysing and then seeing if the students can also apply it to question 4 paper 1, peer assessment table is included to close the loop, helpful hints have been placed in there to give guidence to studetns and extention activities for the more able.

I made a reading test for students to practice their skills. I wrote my own texts and based the questions of the new post 2019 Edexcel reform of the level 2 functional skills. The texts are in an editable word document, I put the questions and answers on a power point but I also included a copy of the questions on a word document. 15 questions in total same as the exam students are expected to spend 75 minutes on this, same as the exam. All resources are fully editable so if there’s anything you don’t like it can be fixed easily but I tried to represent every question that the students may face in the exam.

A reading and writing lesson based on wilderness survival, students have to make decisions on what they should do if they crashed in a desert and then respond to an web forum. English functional skills writing based on politics using emotive language language, connectives, a spelling rule and grammatical rule, designed for a three hour lesson.

Speaking and listening exam preparation. Looks at mark scheme for both exam tasks to suit the new spec of the Edexcel functional skills lesson. New Year comprehension included for Functional Skills level 1 but can be adapted for Functional Skills Level 2 or GCSE English.

A full lesson on comparing texts based on theme of Police power. Task 1 - using quotes Task 2 - A Padlet debate on in class debate depending on home learning or in school. Task 3 - Comparing texts comprehension questions Task 4 - spelling patterns explanation and tasks looking at ‘tion and sion’ patterns, suffixes that end in Y and plural suffixes. Task 5 - Plenary students choose one of three options in order to express their opinion on police powers. Answers included and all worksheets have been put on one editable document so that it can be used for home learning or in the class. I made this for level 1 functional skills but it can be applied to different year groups.

A functional skills lesson on the theme on employability, looks at common work terminology for British employment, it has a reading and a writing task to suit writing a cover letter and understanding a person specification. Discussion opportunities throughout the text its a really good opportunity to talk to students about work. Tasks on connectives and complex and simple sentences included. Should last around 1 hour 40 mins depending on class ability.

Reading for information is about teaching students how to extract particular pieces of information from a text. Its a functional skill that enables them to use English for everyday life, things like looking at holiday deals and train timetables. I’ve put all the resources on one sheet and included a separate answer sheet so that it can easy to follow for home learning. Some of the texts are based on crime and punishment. It covers: Fact and opinion Skimming and scanning Some speaking and listening opportunity in the form of a class debate using information on crimes and punishments. Exclamation marks and possessive apostrophes. Further learning is included with a separate document and a skimming and scanning video.

Functional skills lesson on punctuation, paragraphing, writing in different tenses and using this to write a review. Comes with a reading comprehension, a discussion and a recap of a spelling technique I used in a previous lessons. Lesson is complete with sample answers, extension activities and peer marking for the final written piece. Punctuation covered: commas, full stops, exclamation marks, apostrophes and possessive apostrophes.

A lesson designed to help students become more clear and concise in their writing. Looks at how to make a text more persuasive and is a nice introduction into using persuasive language techniques (direct address, rule of three, powerful adjectives and rhetorical questions). Goes into how techniques would be used for certain text types. It should last approximately two hours. Fully differentiated with extension activities. KS2 adaptable

Functional skills lesson on speech writing, looks at proofreading, planning and employability, should take around an hour and a half depending on class ability.

A full lesson on question 3 paper 1 (two hours approx) A resource staring with matching structural techniques with their definitions , moving onto using structural techniques within creative writing to showing students how to analyse a text in terms of question 3 paper 1, I provide the text and then show where the techniques would be identified on the answer sheet then I provide a sample answer selecting one of the quotes I have found in the text and give students a chance to complete their own PEACE paragraph with a peer marking table at the end.
