I've been a primary school teacher in the UK for over 16 years and most of that time has been spent teaching Year 6. I am passionate about English and inspiring children through creative writing. However, I do believe it is important to give them a good grounding in grammar but believe this can be taught through engaging and creative texts. I use a mixture of techniques including from Talk for Writing and Power of Reading, but don't stick rigidly to their principles.

Instructions - how to defeat a monster

This is a week long unit that can be used in conjunction with Talk for Writing and is based on writing a set of instructions on How to Defeat a Monster. The unit is aimed at Upper KS2 (Year 5 and Year 6) and has resources for LA children. Their is a grammar focus with expanded noun phrases, semi-colons and relative clauses. It links well with DT and ICT units as children can design and make their own monster. My class really enjoyed this unit! This includes flipcharts for use with Activ Inspire.
