Useless Inventions - DT Cover

A DT cover worksheet - No teaching required- Print or assign online. A design challenge to really test creativity. Students are asked to design a useless invention. The product must have a function but the function should be entirely useless. An example of this would be an ‘umbrella umbrella’ an umbrella that clips onto your umbrella to protect it from rain. A transparent t-shirt or a calendar that reads ‘today’ on every day. Students instructed to avoid products with no function, for example, a blank set of playing cards or a cup with holes in it. Really fun and engaging - Enjoyable to mark and return from absence to.

Introduction to Google Sketchup - CAD

(0)
This resource has been designed to introduce students to CAD CAM and teach them the basics of using Google Sketchup specifically with product design in mind. This 30 page slideshow and accompanying booklet will guide students through first understanding what CAD is and then teaching them how to use Google sketchup. The slides have step by step screenshots with written instructions that allow students to work at their own pace. I have used this resource for the past three years and it has really helped my students learn how to use sketchup and design prototypes for their projects. My GCSE students still refer to it when creating joints or CAD modelling for their coursework. The resource doesn’t require much teaching but will work better if the teacher can demonstrate the steps on a projected screen first. Can also be used as cover if required. All the slides are editable.

KS3 Scrap Material Animals

(1)
A KS3 Design and technology project that aims to introduce students to the basic skills and processes required to work with timber and acrylic. The resource contains a 78 page slide show that contains all the information needed to deliver the project at a high level. The resource has structured lessons that will guide students through the design process and introduce them to basic manufacture techniques. The resource has an accompanying project booklet which can be printed and used in class. This is a brilliant project that I have delivered to KS3 students over the past few years and they really connect with it and adore their outcomes. The resource also contains individual lessons plans. A great introduction to Design and technology as the project is challenging but accomplishable enough for students of their age. The project has the depth to stretch higher ability students as much as it facilitates for the not so able. Can be a great project to insert into a KS3 DT rotation/carousel. Booklet is editable and simple enough to incorporate into a larger yearly booklet.
