Created for A-level ENGLISH LITERATURE A (7712/2B) Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day , Option 1, this is an example modern unseen extract taken from Carter's 'The Magic Toyshop' and includes a question on the extract itself, and the follow up question where students need to compare prose and drama. Could be tweaked for the other options on the paper. The extract is a little longer than students would be given in an exam, but I will be using it as a tool to teach Magic Realism in the modern novel. PowerPoint format to save on photocopying, this presentation takes your class through writing a review in stages, with opportunities for discussion and for class interaction. Probably a 30-45minute task, depending on the enthusiasm of your class. A selection of 8 possible examination questions with a carousel activity focused on students planning responses with the Assessment Objectives in mind. The title page refers to 'Rebecca' and the 'Pre-19th Century Poetry', but these questions would work with any of the Love Through the Ages texts and would be easily tweaked.

A carousel activity aimed to take a lesson of 1 hour. Using key letters, students answer a range of questions to annotate some of the key moments from the novel. The questions are focused on the Assessment Objectives for AQA A Level English Literature: Paper 2B: Texts in Shared Contexts: Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day (Drama and Prose Contextual Linking) Some comparisons are made with 'A Streetcar Name Desire', but these could be easily edited to the play of your choice. A worksheet including information about the making of the film and the reception to it, as well as questions to prompt consideration of the audience and context of both the novel and the film. Designed with A Level English Literature in mind, there is a question comparing the film with 'A Streetcar Named Desire', but this could be taken out and replaced with your own comparison text, or omitted altogether. I'll be setting as a homework to read and complete and then using the questions and answers as a discussion base for the following lesson, but could equally be used in class.
