NUMBER TALKS I Grades k-1 I WORKSHEETS 1-20

WHY Number Talks? Encourage students to discuss their answers with their peers. How did they reach the answer? What were they thinking in their head? What facts did they already know that helped them? What did they see? Number talks will get your students engaged in meaningful mathematical conversations that will increase their ability to reason mathematically as well as develop their computational fluency skills and their ability to think flexibly about numbers. When students engage in this short daily activity, they communicate with their peers in a safe environment where it’s okay to not be right all the time. It’s okay to learn from each other. They learn to discuss various strategies and the effectiveness of those strategies. They begin to take risks. Use the powerpoint to model the different ways that we can visualise a given number. This set comprises the numbers 1-2, and shows the number in a ten frame written as a word using hands domino patterns dice patterns subitising patterns clipart version of the number tally marksThe powerpoint is editable so that you can change to the text that you require, and then save as a PDF prior to printing. Ideal for students in their first term of school to establish and consolidate basic number facts. This is for use by one teacher in one classroom. What is a thinkboard? It is a graphic organiser or tool to assist students to make connections across/ within and between different representations of knowledge. The more connections that are made: •the better the understanding of the mathematics •the more likely it will be that the mathematical knowledge is retained •and easier it should be to apply the mathematics The focus of the think board is on finding the connections between the different ways of representing a problem. How to use them •Arrange students into groups of four, placed around the Think Board’s four sections. Provide the students with one of the sections as a starting point and give them time to discuss the idea with their neighbours before deciding on what to record. •You can also work on a Think Board as a whole class or individually. Assessment •Think Boards promote discussion – look for mathematical language used. •Assess individual student’s understanding of a mathematical idea – look at all sections of the •Think Board individually to find strengths and weaknesses This resource contains both PPT and PDF versions in a ZIP file so please ensure that you have the software to open them You will recieve a set of 5 different Thinkboards for each number and an editable version so that you can create your own.

Easter Collaborative Poster I Bulletin Board I Poster

(0)
Looking for a Collaborative Easter Project??? -Let your students work together to create a wonderful HUGE poster to proudly display in your classroom. 36 pages…enough for the largest of classes. -Watch your students and colleagues as they admire the fantastic final product. -Why not use it as a backdrop to take photos of your students to make personalised Easter Cards.? I recommend printing this on heavy card to make compiling this huge poster a little easier. -This resource is designed to be a class collaborative project, with each students working on a page of the larger puzzle/poster. -This resource contains 35 printable pages that can be put together to make a large display poster for your classroom. -The completed poster measures approximately 14cm wide x 14 cm high or 4’wide x 4’ high -Use this image as a guide to see where each of these pieces go….this adds to the collaborative challenge of this project. How to Print -This resource comes in two versions (the choice is yours). Make sure when you are printing that you select full slide or fit to page to get the maximum image on each of the slides. This has been created using US letter (8.5 x 11 inches) but it will print in A4 size also. -For best results print on card stock so that the corners of the pages don’t curl and each section is easier to manage. -I highly recommend that your students use the same medium for the whole poster for consistency. In my opinion, I find crayons or pastels give an even finish whereas markers tend to give more lined effect and is more time consuming to complete -The letter labels can be done with a different medium to create a nice contrast. Markers work well for this aspect of the group task. How to Assemble -My preferred method is to use masking tape, (sticky tape can become very difficult to work with for children) or alternatively have large sheets of butchers paper joined together and paste the puzzle pieces directly onto blank paper. Some trimming may be required. What People are saying about this project “I love these collaborative posters. My students enjoy making them, they help to decorate my classroom, engage them, encourage completion of work, and keeps everyone happy too! Thank you!” “Adorable and comes out fantastic. Thanks” This is for use by one teacher in one classroom. If you would like to share with your colleagues, PLEASE purchase a multiple license. Thank you :)

Do you struggle to get your students to write creatively in your literacy sessions? -This resource is designed to encourage reluctant writers to create their own characters using templates and scaffolds to help build vocabulary and utilise the senses and incorporate them into their writing. -The blank faces give students the opportunity to be creative with their characters and explore emotions, alongside heroes and villains. Encourage them to break with traditional stories and gender -Sterotyping… make the princess the villain in your story, or create an angry cinderalla…who is not at all happy about being treated the way that she is that she starts to think about revenge. -Students can have great fun with these activities, and creative with their drawings. This results often in often funny and engaging stories which students love to share with their peers. These engaging, visual writing prompts with pictures will get even your most reluctant writer writing! These fun writing prompts are no prep, just print and go. -These images are scaffolded by using the students senses to add interest to their writing Sensory details include sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. -Writers employ the five senses to engage a reader’s interest. If you want your writing to jump off the page, then bring your reader into the world you are creating. -When describing a past event, try and remember what you saw, heard, touched, smelled, and tasted, then incorporate that into your writing. -Sensory details are used in any great story, literary or not. Think about your favourite movie or video game. What types of sounds and images are used? What do your favorite characters taste, smell, and touch? -Without sensory details, stories would fail to come to life. -When sensory details are used, your readers can personally experience whatever you’re trying to describe, reminding them of their own experiences, giving your writing a universal feel. A universal quality is conveyed when the writer can personally connect with the readers. -Another note about sensory details: there is no one sense that’s more important than another. It all depends on the scene you’re trying to create. However, imagery, the sight sense, is a common feature in vivid writing. -These are perfect for Writer’s Workshop, Work on Writing, Writing Centers, Substitute Teachers, and Fast Finishers. -These quirky picture prompts are a great way to let the kiddos choose what they want to write about, while also helping to spark their imaginations! -They are perfect for those “I don’t know what to write about!” kiddos. Student Reflection journal. Develop a positive mindset

(0)
Are you looking for a resource that will help your students to develop goal setting and growth mindset through reflection and self monitoring? This resource is designed to be used over the course of a year, so that there is a record of self evaluation taken by students throughout the year.  Self reflection and monitoring are skills that we all need for life. This resource will engage your students throughout the school year, and at the end they have a record of achievements and changes that they have made as they have grown. Developing a positive mindset amongst your students is such an important and integral part of the hidden curriculum, but basic to all of our daily lives. It is not a skill that comes easily and one that needs to be explicitly taught and fostered to enable your students to build a positive mindset. This can be added to your students portfolio as a record of achievements and for reflection. Photocopy extra pages as needed, and I hope that this resource serves you well throughout the year. Suitable for students in middle to upper primary grades. This is an instant download pdf file for you to print and use with your students. Teaching suggestions are included. The best part? This resource requires NO PREP and is easy to use. You can choose to print these pages for students to use a printable journal or booklet. What people are saying about this resource Very satisfied “I have been using these for the new semester to help my students prepare for student led parent conferences. My students struggled with them at first but now they look forward to using them and meeting with me to complete them.” Very satisfied “They are great forms and work better in person than for distance learning. Students are learning to look at what they are doing and how they can work to improve instead of waiting for someone else to tell them.” Very satisfied "Great product to use with my students while we are working hybrid and in virtual settings. Place the rest of the deck face down on the table. 2.Shuffle the target cards and turn over the top card revealing the target number. 3.Let’s say the target card is 36, the player to the left of the dealer will look at the cards in their hand and see if any of them are a factor of 36. 4.If that player has a factor they will place it next to the target card, for instance, if it the player has a 4, they will say 9x4=36, and then the play will go to the next person to the left and continue until a player does not have a card that is a factor of the target number. That person then has to pick up ALL of the cards that have already been played. 5.The next player will turn over the next target card from the top of the pile, and play will continue. 6.The winner is the person who manages to get rid of all of the cards in their hand first. 7.Each player MUST say the multiplication face when playing their card. Teaching Suggestions •Show your students images of different objects. •Next to each word is a list of three ‘banned’ words •Children must describe the object without using any of the given words. •There is a 2-minute timer on each page to add some excitement to the activity. •NO HAND GESTURES OR MIMING ALLOWED •This can be played in teams, or with single players. •Ideal for use with second language learners, to encourage using a wider vocabulary and to speak clearly and succinctly to the group. •This makes for a perfect lesson filler, introductory ice breaker or as a brain break in your classes. •You have been provided with a PDF and PowerPoint version of the game so that it can be printed off onto cards and used for individual students to look at yet hide from their peers. •The PowerPoint version can be used on a variety of devices or on the IWB. ( the rest of the class need to turn away from the board while the image of the object is shown). Students can then click on the timer which is the prompt for the rest of the class to turn around and begin guessing what the object may be from the clues given by the student chosen to be the ‘describer’. This is for use by one teacher in one classroom. If you would like to share with your colleagues, PLEASE purchase a multiple license. Thank you :)

Social Narrative-YOU ONLY NEED TO ASK A QUESTION ONCE-A Social Story

(0)
A Social Narrative is an effective way to teach children how to navigate a new situation, such as starting school or preschool. Social Narratives can help children understand what to expect at school or preschool and they can be used to support orientation, which is particularly useful when children and families are not able to be on-site.  Teaching children how to ask a question only once is a common social skill that needs to be frequently addressed. As educators we always will say things like, “wait’ or “You asked that just a moment ago.”, however we need to explicitly teach these skills. This story can be used to help children to develop skills so that they can learn to function and integrate with other children in the classroom and other social settings.

This is a powerpoint game which will help your students to develop their mathematical thinking skills with some fun problems from the farm. To get the maximum benefit from this resource, it is best to use the support worksheets provided (or their workbooks to show proof of working out). This can be used on the IWB or it can be used on GOOGLE SLIDES . This makes it an ideal resource for Distance Learning (PLEASE NOTE: the sounds will not appear in the online presentation and the fonts may appear to be different) This presentation will only work when it is in PRESENTATION MODE. It is essential that none of the slide order is changed because the slideshow is set up to link to each individual slide, depending on the students’ responses. This presentation has 1 questions- making it ideal to use as a bell ringer, or warm up activity for your math rotations. It can also be used as a stand-alone activity to focus on the area of working mathematically. Encourage your students to show their working out using some of the following strategies 1.Writing down all the information that is found in the number problem 2.Determining what ‘units’ need to be included in the answer eg there were 25 eggs 3.Draw their ideas on paper 4.Use concrete materials 5.Work with a partner to think-pair-share their thoughts 6.Discourage your students from clicking on any of the star responses until they have done the working. Emotions and Feelings-Play mats and discussion cards

This set of cards and teacher notes contains 24 Scenario cards with blank multicultural faces on them. They can be used laminated as playdough mats or to draw on with whiteboard markers. Googly eyes also work really well with this activity and a lot of fun (eye not included) You can use them as discussion starters shown on the whiteboard and discuss how each character would be feeling What would their faces look like? How would their eyes look? Would they have wrinkles on their forehead? Why or why not? How would their mouth look?I have included smaller versions of the cards so that students could use these in barrier games where one child makes a face, and then has to describe to a partner what their face looks like (there is a book or screen between them) This is a wonderful activity for talking and listening. Barrier games are a great way to encourage expressive and receptive language skills Scenarios include My best friend won’t play with me (male and female versions) My dog is sick I have a new baby sister I have a new baby brother I found $2 I am going to a birthday party I lost a tooth I won a race I lost a race My teacher gave me a sticker (male and female versions) I fell over in the playground I have no lunch I made a new friend (male and female versions) I missed the bus (male and female versions) I have a new friend I found a baby bird I fell off the monkey bars We are having pizza for tea I am getting a kitten#sizzlinsummerpk2
