Musical Eras Activities History of Music

There are up to 3 hours of content in this pack, which covers each of the 6 musical eras of the Western Classical Tradition, a 900-year musical journey! It’s a great introduction to the musical eras and because of the way it is designed and structured, it is also an excellent choice for cover work. Each of the six musical eras from the Medieval to the 20th-Century has its own reading, writing, and listening activity, with a further True or False activity for Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, and Romantic and 20th Century, to deepen understanding. While students complete the reading and comprehension activities for each era, there are YouTube links provided to suitable and interesting pieces of music to play in the background, giving students a ‘flavour’ of the era that they are reading about and answering questions about, and a listening sheet to record their observations and opinions for a class discussion at the end of the activity. The links are all checked and are valid as of 28th October 2020. There is also a teacher handout with full instructions as to how to run the lessons, including questions to ask the students, and prompts to remind them of certain things. The great thing about this resource is it is also absolutely perfect for a supply or substitute teacher who has no specialist musical knowledge at all. The teacher handout even has a box at the bottom to give you feedback or concerns from the lesson(s), so you can follow up, just in case you have set it as cover. Everything has been thought of, and it is beautifully presented in an engaging and structured manner. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of my resources and on the quality of my customer service. Please send any enquiries either before or after purchase to rainynightmusic@hotmail.com and I will be more than happy to help you in any way that I can.

A LEVEL MUSIC COMPOSITION Harmonising a Melody AQA Edexcel OCR Eduqas

(0)
This is an Introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a full and comprehensive topic that would fit nicely into 3 x 1-hour lessons, but could be squeezed into 2 x 1-hour lessons with a gifted A-Level Music class if the final task was also set as homework. The content is based around an introduction to Bach Chorales. There are 4 tasks in total. Task 1 is: choosing chords to harmonise a melody. This is based on identifying the key , drawing out triads, and matching given melody notes with the triads/ chords, leading to a 4-part arrangement of the chord progression they have chosen, applying the techniques that are introduced throughout. Task 2 is: Arranging for 4 parts. Students are given a fixed chord progression with which to harmonise the melody from task 1. Meanwhile the PowerPoint will take them through the following: Note Doubling; Consecutive 5ths ; Consecutive 8ves ; Consecutive Unisons ; Chord Spacing ; Six-Way check (SA; ST; SB; AT; AB; TB) to prevent banned consecutives. Task 3 is: Using passing notes to create momentum. Students will be shown a model answer on the PowerPoint to Task 2, which then becomes the starting point for Task 3. The PowerPoint takes students through passing notes (what they are, what they do, and pitfalls of using too many at once) and then students are to add passing notes to the given arrangement. Task 4 is: Working in a minor key. Students use the tonic minor to largely transfer their arrangement from the major, but new concepts are introduced for them to think about: melodic augmented 2nds (and using the melodic minor scale to avoid them); Tierce de Picardie cadence (where, how, and why it’s used); the tricky Mediant in minor keys. From a teaching perspective, you have a full 20-slide Powerpoint making delivery of content easy, MP3 audios of the model answers so students can hear how nice good 4-part writing really sounds, Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 templates if you want to use Music ICT to complete the tasks, 4 x PDF worksheets (that you’ll want to hand out one at a time because model answers become the next worksheet!) in case you don’t have/ don’t wish to use Music ICT. I take great care to ensure my resources are of the highest quality – both in content and in presentation – and I wholeheartedly recommend them to both you and your students. I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers the world over, and I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. GCSE Music CIRCLE OF FIFTHS

GCSE Music CIRCLE OF FIFTHS

This lesson focuses primarily on the Circle of Fifths, and this includes both the major and minor keys up to and including 4 sharps and flats. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 14 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ knowledge of how keys are organised. This is not just a lesson in ‘what’ the Circle of 5ths is, students are taught how to create the circle from scratch. This reinforces understanding, and it also incorporates revision of major and minor scales, with a focus on how major scales create accidentals which become key signatures for major and relative minor keys. Students also discover relationships between keys on the Circle of 5ths as a foundation to appropriate/ most common modulations: Dominant keys to the right/ Subdominant to the left/ Relative Major or Minor inwards or outwards on the rings. There are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between major and minor tonalities is tested. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to, and suggestions are included in the teacher notes on the PowerPoint. All of this comes with a 28-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the lesson smooth and efficient – plus a 4-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet and 4-page detailed answers sheet. With regards to the listening questions, MP3s are provided (and they are always my own compositions), and you may well want to insert the audios into the slide rather than use media player. I really hope that you will enjoy my resources and find them useful. I pride myself on the quality of the resources that I publish, and I welcome feedback and enquiries from all of my colleague-customers across the world. Staff Notation Introducing Music to Year 7

In this download pack, you get a structured 4-page worksheet with 8 separate activities -only one of which is teacher-marked, the rest is student-marked via the Answer Slides included on the 18-slide PowerPoint Presentation, which takes you through the entire structure of the project. If you have 100 minute lessons, you will be just shy of 2 full lessons here - if you have 60-minute lessons, you’ll have 3 full lessons including the assessment and DIT sheet. This unit teaches both Bass and Treble Clef notation (not including rests). The worksheet includes both practical and theory tasks - a right-hand study at keyboard of Ode to Joy, and a left-hand study of the Oompa Loompa Song, for Treble and Bass clef respectively. This allows the theoretical learning to sink in through practical studies. For students who are low ability or who have special needs, there is a full Low- Ability Access pack with alternative worksheet, answers, and a graphic score of Ode to Joy and Oompa Loompa using a system of colourful, cute, and cool graphics of animals courtesy of Pretty Grafik Designs, Montreal, Canada (check them out on Etsy). This access pack is very easy to understand, and all you will need to do is hand it to your TA. No fuss, explanations, or anything. It’s done for you. Still need persuading? Okay - there is a full 30-minutes of video tutorial provided by me - I will actually teach your class the skills in a purpose-made video using Camtasia software, which enables absolute clarity through various tools that you simply can’t repeat in a live setting. While I’m doing this, you can sit at the back of the room, keep an eye on the students and catch up with your marking. I use my video lessons in my own classroom for this reason - and because they fit the worksheets perfectly, there’s no confusion. There is an extension task for the gifted students - a 4-part arrangement of the Oompa Loompa song courtesy of myself in Sibelius Score form (all versions from 4-7.5 including Student and First versions) - and free note rulers (standard and animal ones for the lower-ability) on A3 PDFs that you simply need to print, laminate, and guillotine to keep your keyboards free from board markers, and facilitate instant access to playing music. Finally (yes, there’s more!) you have a 30-mark assessment designed to test the key learning of this project, all complete with an answer sheet and student reflection/ DIT sheet.

Music Worksheets Rhythm and Metre

(0)
This resource comprises 10 worksheets designed to secure, revise, and test knowledge of Rhythm and Metre. Aimed at Key Stage 3 Students, each worksheet should take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete, making them perfect for homework tasks or tests, but also allowing you to set only a few questions as a starter or combine whole worksheets into cover lessons for a supply teacher. If you use it for the latter, you needn’t worry about coming back to a huge pile of marking because full answers and a detailed teacher guide are also included in this resource pack, so students can mark and correct their own work, and teachers with limited specialist subject knowledge are supported. Specifically, the worksheets incorporate the following types of activity: maths with note duration symbols (dotted and un-dotted notes); identifying metres (simple and basic compound time); adding missing bar lines (simple and basic compound time); adding missing note durations from bars (simple and basic compound time); developing rhythms using augmentation and diminution techniques (doubling and halving note values into a new time signature – 2/4 to 2/2 for example). A handy little guide to duration, which can be printed as small cards ahead of the lesson, has been included so that students can simply work the notes out, even if they are only vaguely familiar with note duration symbols – so everything has been thought of for your convenience. I take great care to ensure my resources are of the highest quality – both in content and in presentation – and I wholeheartedly recommend them to both you and your students. I welcome feedback and enquiries from my colleague-customers all over the world, and I can be contacted directly at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com (Steve). GCSE Music MODES and POP CHORDS
rainynightmusicrainynightmusic

GCSE Music MODES and POP CHORDS

(0)
This topic builds upon prior knowledge of chords and scales. There is a dual focus in this topic on modes and added and suspended note chords as found in Pop Music, including how they are labelled and inverted. Students are introduced to the Ionian mode which they identify as the Major scale. They are then taken through the Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian modes, focusing on how each of these modes are simply rearrangements of the Ionian about different notes. Students are taught how rearranging the notes (and therefore chords) of the Ionian change the sound because it changes the tonality of strategic chords – most notably the Primary chords. Activities follow to transpose and identify modes using their unique fixed-interval semitone (half-step) patterns. Students are then introduced to added-note chords, specifically the added 2nd, 4th, and 9th chords – all chords that will be found in any study of The Beatles. Students are taken through how major, minor, augmented, and diminished chords are written in pop music, and how the notes can be worked out using scales and the intervals between the 3 basic notes of the triad. From this point they are shown how to add the 2nd and 4th and how the 2nd becomes a 9th – and plenty of activities follow to consolidate the learning. Following this, suspended-note chords are introduced using similar techniques and, again, plenty of activities follow to consolidate learning – all with detailed answers. The conclusion is to briefly look at Power Chords and inversions of basic pop chords – again, with activities. All of this comes with a 34-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the topic smooth and efficient – plus a 6-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet, and 3-page detailed answer sheet. This lesson focuses on Major and Minor Scales, and that includes both the Harmonic and Melodic Minor scales. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 11 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ ability to create major and minor scales using fixed-interval patterns, use these scales to create basic triads, and observe the differences between the harmony in melodic minor scales and harmonic minor scales. The content is essential to all GCSE Music exam courses, AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and Eduqas, and is useful for both RSL and BTEC courses. It should take about 2 hours to teach. Specifically, the pack includes the following high-quality materials: an original 6-page text-book style handout, with diagrams and annotations, covering the entire content of the topic; a 6-page worksheet containing written activities relating to the creation and identification of all major, minor, and perfect intervals, and the tritone, and a listening activity relating to the aural recognition of these intervals; 10 x 20-second-long MP3 files for the listening activity (also embedded into the PowerPoint); 1 x 34-slide comprehensive and beautifully animated PowerPoint, with detailed teaching guidance notes for every single slide, making delivery of content an absolute breeze; 5-page answer sheet for the activities. There are up to 5 hours of fun to be had, here, and it all comes with beautiful original resources based on ideas from the Harry Potter series, which have then been developed into a complete musical project, which is ideal for either Halloween or Christmas. The project is based on 20 short themes, taken from over 500 years of music history. The composer of the music from which the theme is taken is known as the ‘Composer Wizard’. Each ‘wizard’ has their own card upon which the theme (or ‘spell’) is presented alongside some basic facts about the ‘wizard’ themselves, and some musical element advice to make the spell stronger (dynamics, timbre, etc). The Composer Wizard Cards can be obtained through answering a series of clues - 3 for each card (the Wizard Card Hunt). This part of the project allows students to do some independent learning, researching on the internet, eventually finding the ‘password’ to the next clue, and ultimately to each of the 20 Wizard Cards. Students work in teams, or Houses, to gather as many Wizard Cards as they can during ‘the hunt’, and then spend time learning the spells in preparation for the ‘musical duel’. There are 10 curse spells and 10 antidote spells, all of which have an MP3 audio in the download for this resource. You will also receive 20 x beautifully presented Wizard Cards, 60 x stylishly presented Wizard Card Clues, 1 x master answer card, 1 x completed and organised ‘fixture list’ for the musical duel, 1 x sheet with House Badges (Lions, Snakes, Badgers, and Ravens) for you to print and use in a ‘sorting’ process, should you wish to, and 1 x full project overview supporting the teacher with regard to the successful running of this project. You have everything you need in this download for a really fun project, and whilst it works brilliantly at Halloween or Christmas, it is actually a wonderful introduction to Western Classical Music at any time of the year! As always, I am very proud of the quality of this resource, and I hope that you and your students will find as much enjoyment in completing this project as my own students have done. I welcome feedback from all my colleague-customers, and you can contact me at rainynightmusic@hotmail.com. Thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.
