TURNING POINTS IN HISTORY – THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN is a unit studying a significant turning point in British history. This is an aspect of British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066. With the festive season imminent, this unit gives a good overview of the origins of festivals celebrated at the end of the year, how these festivals are celebrated and some of the connections between festivals. Themes such as lights, feasts and activities are considered. The curriculum revisits the topic of LIGHT at different stages of the Student’s development. Students build on their prior learning to assimilate new concepts. This unit extends the concepts and ideas studied at about age 7 to 9. These myths and stories from ancient Egypt can be used on their own, purely as literature and comprehension, or to give colour and background to a study of ancient Egypt. Often, after we have used some in the class, they ask for more, which is always rewarding for a teacher!

Using power point slides, this unit aims to guide students to identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, the Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones. The topic is broken down into seven lessons, each with its own slides and activities on a worksheet. It has been used with students aged 7 to 9.

An interesting unit, which I have used mainly for 5 to 7 year olds. It includes the topics: Our Homes Why do we need Houses? Living in a Castle The Castle Who’s Who in the Castle The ideas are presented using power point slides. There are simple worksheet activities. One activity requires mud for making a small house.

A great lesson on this ancient civilization. Throughout the power point presentation, students can discuss the structure of the Sumerian society and the role of the family. Activities on the worksheet include the interpretation of Sumerian drawings of classes of society and comprehension questions.

The first in a series of presentations and worksheets, this chapter focuses on Why people trade Students will discuss how the need for trade developed. There is an exercise in which students will recall negotiating with others. There is also a drawing and labeling exercise. The presentation can be used by the teacher to introduce and develop the topic, “Why People Trade”. The notes correlate with the presentation and are followed by the activities.
