If the World Were A Village Inquiry Based Math Project

(0)
Inquiry based math offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of volume, fractions, ratio tables and the four operations., as they plan and build a global village using 3d shapes. Research will be necessary as the children have to know the countries within the continents and a few flags of the most populated countries in the world, together with how education and homes around the world, compare to their own. This week long , authentic learning activity is based on the book, “If the World Were A Village” by David J. Smith and it focuses on the inequality of our global population. I designed this as a part of our complete IB PYP unit of inquiry of How We Organise Ourselves, looking into Human Rights and Responsibilities. The book is not necessary, since there is text included, with data for the children to pull from. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found and reasoning as to their plan and design of their team’s world village. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work, helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task A cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder., with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs. This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for back to school or all year round. I designed it for my IB PYP 5th grade class. It can be used 4th – 6th grade too. You will find the following skills and standards ideally suited for the IB PYP Phase 4 and CCSS Math for 4th and 5th grade: Number sense and base ten operations Fractions: adding, subtracting and simplifying Measure: using measuring tools , area and volume Geometry: identifying and classifying polygons and polyhedrons Place value: using standard form, word form and expanded form. Data analysis Make math fun, engaging an authentic! You can find many more inquiry based learning tools in my store and on my blog. Enjoy! Susan Powers www.pypteachingtools.com

These goal setting banners or bunting are a great way to reflect upon the upcoming year and to set goals related to the IB PYP Learner Profile. The finished result looks wonderful in your IB PYP classroom. And those goals are hanging right there, under those little noses, keeping everyone accountable.  They are easy to assemble and contain all of the traits for the Learner Profile, with options for global thinker, courageous and with UK & USA spelling. Use them to hang or to pin as a beautiful wall display at the beginning of your school year or for New Year. I designed these for lower elementary; 1st-3rd grade. There is a version for big kids too. 3rd-5th grades. Simply print, trim the bottom corners off and staple each edge down below the dotted line to ensure leaving a space to loop the string through. Then, once they are all folded over and stapled, position the banners in the order you prefer and string them together, by pulling the string through each folded area. It is a good idea to attach the string to a pencil to make it easier to “thread” the string through each pennant. You may wish to laminate the pennants before you fold them over. Take the children back in time with this complete IB PYP unit of inquiry. Over 130 pages of web quests, reading for information, inquiry based math projects, hands on writing, art, drama and much more; Where We Are in Place and Time: What have we learned from revolutionaries from the past and how have they influenced society today? By delving back in time the children can explore the concept of time and unrest and how the two big ideas have brought about change in our world, for the better or not. I have taught this unit of inquiry with my 5th grade. Each time, I find that it is one of my favourites. There is so much to explore. With over 100 pages of interactive, hands on , engaging, inquiry based activities, this transdisciplinary unit will take you through math, critical thinking, writing, geography, reading for information and, of course, history. UK & USA spelling. As we travelled through time with our interactive timeline, we travelled back and forth across the Atlantic ocean, exploring the American Revolution, the Rise of the Nazis in Europe, the French Revolution and more. The inquiries came flooding fast and furiously as we learned more and more about how people were affected by revolt through hands on research, various artefacts , communication and much ,much more. The unit culminates in a summative assessment where the children prepare their own wax museum character. Why did Britain want to keep the American colony? If Independence Day is 1776, why was the war still continuing? Why are some revolutionaries violent and others are non violent? How do you win if you don’t use violence? Why were women arrested when trying to get the vote? How did Ghandi win freedom for India if he didn’t fight? Learning how to read clues from artefacts and also from evidence in the text, helped us to become incredible historians as we had to figure out the answers to our lines of inquiry. This involved a lot of reading for information, analysing text and recognising non fiction text features. Through explorations within math, reading, writing, geography, history and art, the children gather knowledge of how revolutionaries brought about change to their world and contributed to societies today. Time Travel! An Inquiry Based Maths Adventure

Get ready to take a journey of adventure around the world and across time with this inquiry based math project. It offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of elapsed time, measure and scale, area, place value and fractions as they select their countries to visit and travel back in time exploring historical moments around the world. Text is included with data that the children will have to identify in order to solve the problems. Research will be necessary as the children have to know the location of their countries, capital cities as well as facts and figures with each historical marker or event. Math becomes authentic! UK & USA spelling included. But, before they even set off on their adventure, they have to design their own time travel machine! This was designed to be a mixture of collaborative group work and independent work but of course you can opt to do either or all. I prefer to have the children work on the pages individually before they compare their designs and work together as a small group to collaboratively create the map, their group plan of the time machine and planning their presentation. It usually takes me about 2 weeks to complete the entire project. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found and reasoning as to their plan, design of their team’s route, their discoveries and their designed machine. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task B cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included.
