I created this for our IB PYP theme of Sharing the Planet, with our central idea of: Living things are interdependent with predictable cycles and patterns. This colourful set of IB PYP Trans Disciplinary themes posters is a great way to display the theme of your unit. The kid friendly language helps with the understanding of the overall theme and allows the children to make that connection between your central idea and the theme. (with English and American spelling  ) Display them altogether or simply introduce each theme as you begin a new unit of inquiry. Either way that you choose, it’s a wonderful way to introduce the new unit as you also introduce the central idea and key concepts. The Digestive System - A Science Inquiry

Flippables, foldables, 3d models, experiments, research, transdisciplinary…….all in the name of inquiry based science. This mini unit inquires into the digestive system . It is aligned with the IB PYP and is a part of my complete unit of inquiry looking at the human body and how our organs and systems are interdependent, together with how we compare to the systems that give life to other organisms. This mini unit is perfect if you are only looking into the digestive system. UK & USA spelling included. It is wholly differentiated with tasks marked A being more challenging than those marked B. It is suitable for grades 4-6. I have planned around the key concepts of form, function and connection. Our lines of inquiry are: •What is the digestive system and how does it serve our body? •.How do the organs function and connect within a body system? These posters are a great, colourful tool to use as you teach the scientific method. Hang them all year long to reinforce the concepts of inquiry and critical thinking skills. These are a part of my complete unit study of The Scientific Method, complete with over a dozen hands on experiments and STEM challenges. Hands on science becomes easy to incorporate into your day with this easy prep, inquiry based learning packet of activities that encourages thinking, communication and questioning within children, from 2nd-5th grade. The skills developed from these engineering science activities leave the planning to the children. Developing thinkers and inquirers is a focal point of the International Baccalaureate but also the more recent CCSS. The speaking and listening opportunities are rich within this printable packet. Hands on science becomes easy to incorporate into your day with this easy prep, inquiry based learning packet of activities that encourages critical thinking, inquiry, communication and questioning within children, from 2nd-5th grade. The skills developed from these science task card activities leave the planning to the children .The Scientific Method booklet is more suited to 3rd- 5th grades. Developing thinkers and inquirers is a focal point of the International Baccalaureate but also the CCSS. The speaking and listening opportunities are rich within this printable packet with UK & USA spelling. Each science activity uses minimal materials, mostly paper, sticky tape and scissors. A few require a wee bit more preparation with water, milk or soda. Each task can be done as part of a group, thus adding social skills into the mix, or with a partner. You can have each group working on a single task or rotate the tasks around a few groups. The posters and booklet are designed to help reinforce the children’s understanding of the process of the Scientific Method. You can follow the lesson plan suggestions or mix and match the pages and create an order to suit you and your class. The children have to read through the instruction, discuss their hypotheses, decide upon a group plan, re-evaluate their plans based upon progress, constantly communicating with their peers. It is great to encourage their own awareness of their thinking and observations, questions and further inquiries as the project continues. As they become more familiar with the process, they can design their own experiments and suggest variables to test their hypotheses. Simply print the cards and laminate them. There is a recording sheet attached to each card that can be photocopied and cut for any number of students that you wish. These are designed with each activity card in mind but can easily be mix and match too. Take the children to the centre of the Earth! Be the Miss Frizz of your classroom with this complete earth science, IB PYP unit of inquiry. How the World Works: Central idea: The Earth’s structure is constantly changing through processes and forces that can impact society. This unit is all about the amazing moving and shaking of our Earth’s surface, as we explore the science behind plate tectonics and how the processes under the Earth lead to the movement and changing of our world as we know it, how landforms are created and the cycle of the Earth’s life is at the hands of erosion and deposition. Go back 200 million years and explore Pangaea and make the connections between the world then and now. With over 140 pages of interactive, science foldables, flippables, hands on , engaging, inquiry based activities, this transdisciplinary unit will take you through math, critical thinking, writing, geography, reading for information and, of course, science. UK & USA spelling included. Lines of inquiry include: How is the Earth structured? How does the Earth’s crust move and separate? What causes different landforms? How do the changes in Earth’s surface impact humans? What tools do scientists use to detect and protect from potential natural disasters? A week long, collaborative summative assessment is an inquiry based project involving a mystery island that must be explored, researched and prepared for populating. The children are required to use their knowledge over the course of the unit, work as a team and present their findings, hypotheses and designs. Learning how to read clues from artefacts and also from evidence in the text, helped us to become incredible geologists as we had to figure out the answers to our lines of inquiry. This involved a lot of reading for information, analysing text and recognising non fiction text features. Through explorations within math, reading, writing, geography and history, the children gather knowledge of how plate tectonics contribute to how our world is shaped today.
