About Greenbank High School
Greenbank High School is the only all-girls', 11-16 school in Sefton primarily serving the classic seaside resort of Southport. It is a high achieving school with traditional values complemented by a dynamic approach to learning. There are at present 1018 pupils on roll with more than 100 teaching and support staff. It was the founding member, as a DFE approved sponsor due to consistent high performance, of Southport Learning Trust which means we work in collaboration with our partner schools Stanley High School, Kew Woods Primary and Maghull High School.
Greenbank enjoys an excellent reputation in the community. It has a very strong academic record and a history of which it is justly proud, with examination results significantly above the national average. Our curriculum is broad and balanced and seeks to maximise the number of pupils who are able to achieve the English Baccalureate. Pupils enter Greenbank with an average points score above the national average and make excellent progress. We have a stretch and challenge curriculum that allows more able pupils to flourish through an emphasis on increased independence. Greenbank believes all pupils should be able to make exceptional progress and extra support is given to those pupils who need a boost in learning.
Greenbank has an experienced Safeguarding Team who have all been trained as Designated Leads in this area. The team consists of the Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Safeguarding who is the Designated Safeguarding Lead, the SENDCO and Senior Learning Mentor who are Deputy DSLs, and 3 Learning Mentors.
All pupils are able to participate in our wide range of extra-curricular activities ranging from our extensive club provision to the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme at Silver and Bronze level in Years 9, 10 and 11. We have outstanding extended provision in Music, Dance, Drama and Sport and run an extensive range of overseas visits such as to our link schools in France and Ghana, a Science visit to CERN, music tours, skiing visits and humanities visits to Italy, Poland and Iceland.
The school holds a number of quality marks to validate excellence in these areas. The British Council International Schools’ Award was gained in recognition of our global dimension work with our most recent redesignation being in July 2019. We have a dedicated Language Centre, which houses an authentic foreign street and market place. Latin is offered as well as French and Spanish. All faculty areas contribute towards the delivery of internationalism, to ensure pupils are prepared to face the demands of the wider world. The NACE (National Able Children in Education) Challenge Award was achieved again in October 2019 to validate the exceptional outcomes and provision for More Able Gifted and Talented Pupils (MAGT). In July 2019 Greenbank achieved the Association of PE and Sport Quality Mark at Distinction level again in recognition of the high quality work in this area, which so many staff play a part in and are encouraged to support. Greenbank achieved Artsmark Gold status in recognition of high performance, participation and provision in creative arts and is striving for platinum by 2022. The school has also been recognised as a Trinity College Arts Award Champion School as a a result of many pupils achieving the Arts Award at a variety of levels. Greenbank holds the Geographical Association Secondary Geography Quality Mark and is aiming to be a centre of excellence at the next accreditation
Accommodation includes 7 Science laboratories, 5 ICT suites, a Learning Zone incorporating a library, 7 technology suites, gymnasium and two Music suites. The school is fortunate to have a brand new floodlit multi-purpose all-weather pitch, a large modern sports hall, a state of the art fitness suite available for staff use and a theatre hall all of which benefits not only the pupils but the community. Approximately every ten years we are the home to the British Open Golf Championship in partnership with the adjacent Royal Birkdale Golf Course
ICT strategy is carefully managed to keep the school at the forefront of education technology. We were a leading innovator in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) provided through Firefly and have delivered high quality remote learning through Google Meet. This has greatly enhanced staff and pupil access to resources for all lessons and has enabled forums for staff and pupils to be developed. The school has over 300 networked PCs and electronic interactive whiteboards in every classroom. We have a range of mobile technology that is used within the classroom to enhance learning.
There are strong links with the local community and a considerable amount of money is raised each year for a large variety of charities. Parental participation is actively encouraged and there is a flourishing Parent Teacher Association, which has made important contributions to the life of the school. Staff can apply to the PTA for funding additional items for pupils.
