About Heywood Prep
Heywood Prep is a long established Independent Prep School located in the heart of Corsham, Wiltshire. Corsham is a short drive from the M4 and the nearest city is Bath, which is 10 miles away. The school’s catchment area extends beyond Corsham, itself an affluent market town, to include the neighbouring towns and villages. The main school is housed in a beautiful Grade II listed Georgian building constructed in 1776 and includes: classrooms, kitchens and dining room, staff room and cloakrooms. Other buildings include an attractive barn conversion which contains the reception classrooms and school office. In addition, there are further specialist facilities: high spec ICT resources, well-stocked art room and a multi-purpose hall serving as gymnasium and theatre. A separate building adjacent to the main school, (formerly the Corsham Fire Station), is used by Heywood’s very successful Nursery School. The outside area includes a playing field, netball court, an all-weather sports court, playgrounds, gardens and a large pond. Heywood Prep has two forms in every year group, with approximately 16 children in each form to preserve the ‘small school’ feel which embodies our ethos. We anticipate having 240 pupils on role in September 2017 with 200 from Reception to Year 6, and 40 pupils in our nursery.
Heywood Preparatory School educates boys and girls from age 2 to 11. At the end of Year 6, the majority of children leave for a wide range of selective independent senior schools in the area. The school has an excellent track record of preparing and achieving entry into the first choice school for pupils and great care and consideration is given to ensure each child enters the senior school best suited to their needs. Heywood Prep is a happy school which produces caring, thoughtful children. The staff place great emphasis on nurturing and developing the talents of each pupil, encouraging them to have open and enquiring minds which will equip them to thrive in the next stage of their education. Academic standards are high and children benefit from a full and challenging curriculum. There is a strong commitment to encouraging all pupils to experience a range of extra-curricular exciting activities and personal development is supported through excellent pastoral care. At Heywood Prep children build skills, techniques and a love of learning that will serve them throughout their school career. In the summer of 2012, Heywood Prep joined the Wishford Schools group and the school began an exciting period of investment, modernisation and development, with investment and support from the Wishford group. The school’s buildings and resources are being modernised and new teaching space has been created. The Early Years department has been comprehensively refurbished and two new Reception classrooms created to allow the school to operate on a two form entry basis. Wishford Schools is a small, friendly group of six prep schools. The group aims to provide an excellent education to all pupils, giving every child the opportunity to shine. Standards and expectations are high, and staff and pupils are challenged and supported to give their best. As a family-run group, the group has a very long-term outlook. This enables investment in the staff, facilities and resources needed in order for the schools to thrive. The group firmly believes that if its pupils are happy and successful, then the business will also succeed. The schools are run in a business-like manner, but the happiness, safety and education of pupils always comes first. Schools work closely with the group’s senior leaders to define the school’s strategy and then enjoy the autonomy to run their schools, while benefiting from the support that membership of the group brings. In addition to strategic input and the sharing of best practice, the group provides expertise in property, legal, HR, finance, compliance and marketing matters leaving heads with time to focus on the children within their care. In addition, Heads work closely with an Advisory Board of experienced school leaders, and with each other, meaning that someone is always available to offer advice and support.
