About Kingswood Academy

Thank you for your interest in working at Kingswood Academy.

Our vision is to deliver world class learning, which places no limits on what young people can achieve; and we are rapidly becoming a beacon of educational excellence in Hull. It is our mission to ensure that every one of our students is equipped with the skills, qualifications and attributes needed to live a happy and successful life in the 21st Century.

Underpinning our vision for educational excellence are our 6 key drivers: the highest expectations, never give up, everyone is valued, value feedback, no excuses and outstanding learning. These aspirational and inspirational principles, were jointly created by students and staff to drive the Academy forward. At Kingswood Academy we live and breathe these key drivers and are absolutely passionate and determined to ensure that our students receive the best education. We will not settle for anything but the best and don’t tolerate mediocrity.

In the summer of 2017, for the third year running, we celebrated our best ever GCSE results. We, yet again, had significant increases in the number of students achieving a grade 4 (old C grade pass) in both English and Maths. Our Progress 8 score of +0.48 puts us in the top two schools in the city and shows that on average our students made almost half a grade more progress than students did nationally, across their 8 best subjects. In 2017 64% of our students were disadvantaged, and our Progress 8 score for disadvantaged students was +0.52. At Kingswood Academy all students make good progress in every subject, regardless of their starting point and background.

In February 2018 we received a full section 5 OFSTED inspection. This visit was a success and Kingswood Academy is now rated as a ‘good’ school in all categories. The OFSTED report is extremely positive and outlines the vast array of improvements which have been made over the last three years. This OFSTED report along with our 2017 results shows that Kingswood Academy is now a great school. However, we are not complaisant and will not be satisfied until Kingswood Academy is truly ‘Outstanding’ in all areas; turning Kingswood Academy into the beacon of educational excellence that our community deserves.

This summer the 2018 results significantly improved again, delivering a Progress 8 score of +0.74 (unvalidated) and an Attainment 8 score which was significantly above the National Average. The progress pillars in every subject were positive, our disadvantaged Progress score improved to +0.66 (unvalidated) and our SEN Progress score improved to +0.86 (unvalidated). On the back of our strong results and the academy’s growing reputation for excellence the academy has rapidly grown in size from 510 students to 950 students in the last 3 years; and over the next 2/3 years the academy will grow to 1250 students.

We have a relentless focus on raising the academic progress of our students. Teaching and Learning is a passion for all of our staff and we firmly believe it is the key to genuine school improvement. When every teacher is delivering outstanding learning day in day out, truly loves their subject, makes learning interesting, fun and relevant, forges excellent relationships with all students, knows the detail and nuances of the exam specifications, and is proven and knows how to deliver top notch results, genuine sustainable school improvement takes place. We are passionate about ensuring that every classroom in our academy is filled with this type of teacher.

On top of our fantastic classroom teaching, from our excellent staff, we have extended the school day until 5pm for our Year 11 students, we provide 1 to 1 tuition and run intensive academic residentials to accelerate learning. In addition, to raise academic standards and student aspirations we work with professional coaches who are renowned across the country for improving achievement and standards in schools; these coaches have also had success working with large multinational companies including NIKE and Chelsea football club. Our students recently commented to OFSTED that these interventions are having a very positive impact on their learning. OFSTED also commended the academy on the rapid academic improvements which have been made in the last 3 years.

We are also very passionate about our competition based house system. The house system aims to build teamwork, confidence and community through competition. There are four houses: Johnson, Wilberforce, Sullivan and Reckitt. Every student and every member of staff is attached to one of our houses and competes to earn points for their house. Students can earn points for things such as attendance, progress, photography, sport, poetry, chess etc. You name it, we’ve got a competition to enable everyone to get involved. We want every student to develop the character, grit and determination to enable them to compete and experience what it feels like to be part of a successful team, as well as getting first hand experiences of team camaraderie and team spirit.

Finally, at Kingswood Academy we are fortunate to have a multi-million-pound building which was named one of the best buildings in the UK by the country's most prestigious architectural institution, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Our state of the art facilities provide students with a superb learning environment in which they can excel. Every classroom at Kingswood Academy is spacious, bright and modern and equipped with the latest technology to support learning. Our other facilities include a professional theatre and recording studio, a full size 4G football pitch, a range of dance and drama studios and a state of the art design and technology workshop.

We welcome visits to the academy, to see the school in action and to discuss this post and your career development opportunities. To book an appointment with the Headteacher please email Cathrine Weightman (PA to the Headteacher) on cweightman@thekingswoodacademy.org
