About Priory Mark College

Mark College is a Beacon status secondary school for girls and boys aged 10 to 19 with specific learning difficulties or differences associated with dyslexia. Placements for both residential and day students are for 35 weeks.

Our aim is to give students the opportunity to achieve their full potential so that they can pursue their ambitions and achieve their personal goals.

Many of our students have struggled in mainstream education and thrive in an environment with other dyslexic students, where the level of support and teaching methods are specifically designed to overcome the challenges that dyslexic pupils face. Some of our students also have dyspraxia, which presents co-ordination difficulties and problems of perception, language and thought.

Mark College offers an environment which promotes self-confidence, self-reliance and self-esteem and provides students with the strategies that they need to meet the challenges associated with their specific learning difficulties.

We offer a solid education and strong sense of personal development to help our students become independent learners, go on to higher education and lead successful, independent lives. The advantage of being in a setting where everyone has dyslexia is that instead of trying to hide their difficulties in reading, writing or spelling, students are encouraged to recognise their differences and concentrate on the learning, rather than the literacy, and to display their abilities in various areas of the curriculum. We use voice input technology for students who have difficulty writing quickly or spelling.

Our curriculum is broad and balanced and, in addition to mainstream subjects where there is a particular focus on English and maths, we teach organisation and study skills. All students work on an individual plan that is tailored to their specific needs.

Our teachers have years of experience developing successful strategies that achieve outstanding results for dyslexic pupils. Many of our teachers are specially qualified to teach pupils with dyslexia, including those in our English, mathematics and science departments.

Most students will sit seven or eight GCSEs and achieve excellent results.

Our facilities for physical education are similarly outstanding. We have nine acres of playing fields where students play most field sports, including cricket, soccer and rugby, together with athletics and tennis on two hard courts. Our purpose-built sports centre houses four badminton courts, volleyball courts and a weight-training gym.

There are over 30 sports and leisure activities available to pupils during the school year, including orienteering, caving, climbing, dry-skiing, canoeing, art and drama clubs. All 14-year-olds are encouraged to take their Bronze level Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Students live in three residential houses on the campus, with bedrooms for four, two or single occupancy. Our sixth form facility offers en-suite accommodation.
