About Swanshurst School
Swanshurst is an "Outstanding School" for girls with 1760 students on roll aged 11-19 years. Behaviour is exemplary, "...pupils conduct and attitudes are excellent" (Ofsted 2017).
We offer excellent support and CPD for staff at all stages of their career.
Swanshurst has a large and diverse sixth form which offers a range of A level, BTEC and technical courses at level 3 and level 2. Consequently, there are excellent opportunities for colleagues to teach and support students in their subject specialism post-16. Our sixth form ethos centres around 3 of our whole school values of independence, aspiration and resilience. We have high expectations of our sixth form students and they are confident, articulate and excellent role models for younger pupils.
Our staff are committed to supporting the wellbeing of all our students. Our girls are safe, happy and enquiring young people who enjoy their learning and relish new opportunities.
We have a thriving, tolerant, multicultural intake which reflects the vibrant diversity of Birmingham.

We are a learning community where staff and students are committed to the principle of constant reflection and improvement and we offer a well-established, innovative programme of high quality professional development and excellent opportunities for career progression.
Swanshurst is committed to welcoming and supporting teachers joining the profession. We provide an extensive programme of induction and support for NQTs throughout their first year. This includes a series of in-house CPD sessions together with a personalised coaching approach. NQTs are also linked to an experienced subject mentor and have access to a wider support programme, where they collaborate with the NQTs across a network of local schools.
Along with opportunities for Masters qualifications, (through institutions such as The University of Birmingham, Warwick University and Birmingham City University) support in school also continues through the RQT years (+1 and +2). We proactively seek to spot leadership talent early and there are always opportunities to experience and train for early responsibility positions. The support continues when many go on to take up middle and senior positions. This takes the form of 'on the job' development alongside access to accredited training programmes "Leaders benefit from relevant and specific training to improve their leadership skills. Middle leaders describe a culture of shared ownership and best practice" (Ofsted 2017).
Students achieve excellent outcomes at Key Stage 4. These are well above national for all groups including disadvantaged and for those with SEN. Our post 16 students make good and improving progress across academic and vocational programmes.
We are committed to providing inspiring and engaging teaching and learning. We aim to instil in our students an aspirational mind-set which ensures that our girls have consistently high expectations for their own academic achievement. "Pupils are able to concentrate on their learning because of the high levels of cooperation and motivation that are established within lessons"(Ofsted 2017)
We have dedicated teams who work with the most able, those with specific learning needs and disadvantaged students to make certain they realise their full potential to become confident and independent learners.
Our pastoral support makes the school an outstanding place to study and grow.
The holistic approach of nurturing well - rounded, happy students in a safe and caring environment is led by a pastoral team with a wide range of expertise.
Each Year Team is led by a teaching Head of Year who is well - supported by a Deputy Head of Year and Learning Mentor.
Form tutors play a key role in nurturing and development of our young people.
Learning doesn't stop when students leave the classroom, so we offer a wide variety of enrichment opportunities which include extra - curricular activities at lunchtime and after school, as well as a wide variety of trips and visits.
With clubs as diverse as chess to African drumming and extensive sporting activities including skiing trips, there is plenty on offer for all interests.
We have a thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.
We are proud of the enrichment activities that we provide for our students. Through participation in such activities, students gain key life skills, develop their self - confidence and acquire a competitive edge when making university or work - based applications.
