About Sydenham School

We are very successful, achieve excellent results, and enjoy a good reputation in the local community and with our local primary schools.
We see ourselves as a forward-looking, high-achieving and genuinely comprehensive school. There is a strong commitment to the education of all students, and we pride ourselves in being able to support students to develop their full potential.

Sydenham is a very positive environment, with a staff whose dedication to education, along with their commitment and passion, make the school a wonderful place to work, providing a fantastic and varied education.

In September 2003, we were proud to open our doors as the first specialist school in Lewisham, and one of only a few Science Specialist Schools across the whole country. The science emphasis goes hand in hand with maths, and we are using the various strands of the initiative to boost the achievement of our students in these areas, across all the key stages.

We are introducing courses in Science and Mathematics to meet the range of abilities, needs and interests; we are enriching the curriculum with activities and opportunities and we are developing a range of interactive technologies across the school to make the curriculum exciting, engaging and challenging.

We have built a Science Centre within the school and have been working hard to support science in a number of Lewisham schools both primary and secondary. We have developed training/learning opportunities for our own staff, for staff in other schools, for our parents and other members of the community. We promise that we will hold on to our central commitment to develop creativity and critical awareness, in science and maths certainly, but also across our school.

In July 2007 Sydenham has received an Artsmark Gold Award from the Arts Council of England which recognises our commitment to providing opportunities across all the arts from drama to music, design to literature, dance to sculpture. The scheme also encourages schools to work in partnership with artists and arts organisations.
