About Tadcaster Grammar School
Welcome to Tadcaster Grammar School
At Tadcaster Grammar School [TGS] we put the needs of students at the forefront of our decision making and practice. Our curricular and co-curricular offer responds to the aims and aspirations of individuals and we structure these as a 7-year experience. The school is fortunate to have a highly committed and talented staff and governing body and our students are motivated, articulate and keen to learn. TGS is a larger than average school, but we organise our care, guidance and pastoral systems so everyone is seen, heard and valued. Our recent entry into the STAR MAT as a partner school has strengthened our ability to ensure all students enjoy their learning and wider school experience across the 4-19-year-old age range.
By guaranteeing great learning experiences we aim to enable all our young people to develop into happy, well prepared, responsible adults. Our school community is friendly but disciplined and our students are expected to work hard and as a consequence achieve highly.
We are particularly proud of the extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities we have to stimulate and enhance the growth of our students into well rounded adults who are prepared to face the challenges beyond school.
All staff joining the school can expect to receive a great deal of support and guidance. The Assistant Headteacher responsible for teacher development organises an extensive induction programme for all teaching staff new to Tadcaster Grammar School with the aim of integrating colleagues into the team as quickly as possible. This complements guidance given by members of the Leadership Team together with support from Faculty and House Leaders. All staff are encouraged to participate in training courses related either to their current responsibilities or to areas in which they wish their knowledge and skills to develop.
Six Houses – One Community
At the heart of our pastoral support is our vertical tutoring structure. All members of the school community are members of one of six Houses. Students are placed into mixed aged (11 -18) tutor groups, which meet each day for twenty five minutes and learn to operate as a small self-supporting group, rather like a family group. Our tutor groups are led by a tutor who will remain with that tutor group year on year, thus offering consistent care and support. Newly appointed staff are expected to fulfil the role of a tutor. Each of our Houses consists of thirteen tutor groups and is led by a House Leader, assisted by a Lead Tutor. Our highly experienced House Leaders oversee the achievements and well-being of all students in their House.
Sixth Form Courses
Tadcaster Grammar School has a large and thriving Sixth Form where many students choose to enrol to extend their studies post-16.
Naturally, we are very proud of the achievements of our Sixth Form students, most of whom gain employment, apprenticeships and places at Universities throughout the country. Post-16 courses offer both continuity and variety for our students. We provide:
- A familiar, purposeful environment
- Staff who are fully aware of each student’s needs and capabilities
- A warm, friendly but structured ethos
- Continuous individual care and guidance
- Relatively small class sizes, guaranteeing greater personal tuition and monitoring
Students may select combinations of subjects from a broad option structure, which can be viewed on the school website.
I look forward to meeting you!
