About The Minster School
The Minster School has an enviable reputation for providing an excellent education to its students and is committed to both tradition and also a contemporary education for all. Situated in the attractive market town of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, the Minster School is a comprehensive school of 1600 students with a catchment including local villages alongside the town of Southwell itself. As a Church of England Voluntary Aided school, a number of students actively engaged in their faith are awarded places alongside the majority who live within catchment and for whom this is their local comprehensive. Our school is strongly founded on Christian principles and fully inclusive of all, whether of strong individual faith or none.
The Minster School has a current outstanding rating from Ofsted and from its Statutory Inspection of Anglian and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).
An extract from our last Ofsted inspection:
“This school is highly effective so that the outcomes in all areas are outstanding. All aspects of provision were judged to be of the very highest quality and as a result students make outstanding progress. The school has done exceptionally well in ensuring high levels of consistency across all subjects and for all groups of students. This highly impressive picture applies equally to the sixth form. The school’s unrelenting focus on improving teaching and learning has paid off.”
The school confidently plays a number of roles, each successfully supporting the very best education:
- National Teaching School, The Minster Teaching School Alliance (MTSA)
- National Maths Hub
- National Support School with a National Leader of Education as Head Teacher
- Choir School for Southwell Minster Cathedral
- Post-16 provider for up to 400 students
- Junior School provider for musically talented pupils including the cathedral choristers.
- Lead provider for the Nottinghamshire Music Hub
The Minster School is one of the oldest continuous educational foundations in England, tracing its origins to the establishment of Southwell Minster and the education of the choristers. We are still very fortunate to benefit from uniquely close links with the cathedral and this relationship enriches many aspects of school life. Juxtaposed with tradition is our contemporary setting in custom-built accommodation and our daily efforts to ensure students are well equipped not only academically but also with the skills and attitudes to help them succeed in a rapidly changing world.
Our school motto is “Succeeding Together” and this is underpinned by 5 key virtues drawn from Christian teachings, designed to include all in deep discussion about their individual development. Through wisdom, optimism, resilience, kindness and service we aim to create a considerate and aspirational learning community for all.
The ongoing development of the very best teaching and learning for students sits at the heart of our work. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of professionals working tirelessly to do their very best for students.
Each member of teaching and support staff has different aspirations for the future and we endeavour to support them to meet their goals. The Minster Teaching School Alliance has a key role to play and more than 50 members of the Minster School’s staff have benefited from nationally recognised programmes. Members of staff also benefit from and lead a range of networks across the alliance of schools.

The Governors and Staff of Muskham Primary School have greatly appreciated and benefitted from the collaboration with the Minster School.. It has contributed a great deal to the continued, rapid rebuilding and a deserved Ofsted rating of Good. The pupils of Muskham Primary are again receiving the excellent education they are entitled to expect, and their parents/carers have renewed confidence in the school. The collaboration has affected the working techniques and positive impact achieved by staff at all levels, including senior leaders, middle leaders, class teachers, teaching assistants, office and governors.- A Chair of Governors
The Minster School has a really fantastic ethos of caring. It cares about the children, it shares the information with parents, it lets the parents get involved should they want and it gets involved in the local community. When I read the newsletter I often have a tear in my eye as I read about the activities and charities the children have got involved with locally. This in turn reflects on the children who care about others.- Parent
We would like to thank you for all the help, support and encouragement given to our daughter over her years at the Minster School. She has really appreciated the enthusiasm and the discussions she had with her subject teachers and has benefited from their experience and knowledge. Sophie has now fulfilled her ambition of achieving a place at Cambridge University- Parent
Thank you to the teachers for all they have done for my daughter. She has wrung every last drop of opportunity from the school and leaves it with a heavy heart but full of excitement for the future. You have created a brilliant environment where, for her, learning has been fun.- Parent
The long-established Christian ethos of the school is valued by all members of the school community and has a positive impact on behaviour, relationships and attitudes to learning. The school’s understanding of Christian living promotes and gives rise to a profound ethos of service.- SIAMS inspection report 2016
