University technical colleges are state-funded technical schools that give students the skills they need to innovate and invent. UTC South Durham is the first UTC in the North East. It opened in 2016 with the aim of providing vital training in advanced manufacturing and engineering.

With a vision of inspiring young people to become engineers and scientists, UTC South Durham is an environment of innovation, collaboration and excellence.

The school has a threefold focus on academic subjects, technical education and workplace learning. Students gain GCSE and A Level qualifications, study engineering with state-of-the-art equipment, and form partnerships with employers, community groups and other education providers. Young people have the chance to establish relationships with businesses that will help them gain experience for the future.
