About Wellington School

Wellington School is situated in Timperley, a quiet residential area of Altrincham, south of Manchester. The school is easily reached by the Altrincham to Bury Metro Link and excellent bus services.  The school is co-educational with at present 1330 students in Years 7-13 and a teaching staff of 81.

Trafford LA, within which the school is located, operates a total selection system at age 11,  whereby 40% of the cohort are admitted to Grammar Schools.

In April 1993, Wellington School achieved Grant Maintained Status and in September 1994 received Technology College Status. The school was granted a Change of Character to become an 11 - 18 school in June 1996. The school became a Foundation School in September 1999. Recent awards include the prestigious Charter Mark and for the third time Investor in People awarded in June 2006.  The school has also been listed  by the DCSF as being a High Performing Specialist School and has received three School Achievement Awards. In March 2003, the School was named as ‘Outstanding’ by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools in his Annual Report.

In September 2006, the school was once again judged as ‘Outstanding’ by an HMI led Ofsted team.  The team identified as one of the key strengths ‘The extremely strong focus placed on teaching and learning’ which ‘permeated all aspects of school life’.  They added that the school provided ‘a supportive environment in which students blossom’.

Given this selection system, it makes results at GCSE quite remarkable. In 2009, 73% achieved 5 or more subjects at A* - C (including English and Maths 62%), a figure which outperforms the majority of comprehensive schools in the country which admit the full ability range. These are genuine results and have not been enhanced by introducing performance table-friendly courses which may not be appropriate for individual pupils. Teaching staff  take perhaps more pleasure in knowing that 100% of the year group achieved at least 5 or more GCSE passes A* - G.

Prior to admission, Year 7 students are assessed and placed in broad ability bands for teaching.  This continues through Year 8.  At present, Year 9 students are placed in one of nine sets according to ability.  Beginning in Year 8 a group of sixteen of the most able pupils are identified and taught as a group.

Examination courses commence in Year 10, with considerable subject choice within National Curriculum guidelines, culminating in GCSE accreditation.  The school offers a curriculum which is GCSE and A Level based.  This adds additional credibility to the results when comparisons are made. FFT analysis suggests the School is regularly in the top 25% of schools for Value Added KS2 to KS4.

The majority of our successful Year 11 students choose to return to the school’s Sixth Form. Sixth Form courses including  Key Skills and 21 'AS' / 'A2' Levels have now been introduced.  Currently there are 150 students in the Sixth Form.

The caring atmosphere within the school has a firm, underlying commitment to high standards of behaviour, attitude and effort.   The pastoral system is organised on a Year basis and is intended to complement and support the academic work of the school and promote the welfare and academic achievement of all pupils.

Directors of Year have responsibility for the academic progress of a year group and play an integral part in the drive for consistently high academic standards and achievements.

Wellington School expects and encourages students to work hard, thereby enabling them to achieve excellent grades at GCSE. This forms the basis of the next stage of development which may be employment, further education or the Sixth Form at the School.

The School has a well defined Induction Programme for NQT's and new staff which is co-ordinated by a Deputy Headteacher.

Wellington School is a non-smoking site and expects high standards of appearance from both students and staff.

During the last six years, the school has undergone extensive refurbishment and new building programmes.  All teachers enjoy their own permanent teaching base.  Specialist classroom provision ensures that all Science teachers have their own laboratory and all technology teachers have dedicated workshops.  The PE Department has benefited from a new fitness suite and girls changing room and a remodelled boys PE changing room.  The Art Department has moved in to three refurbished rooms.  The School has expanded its ICT provision and there are three rooms available for dedicated ICT teaching to support the wider curriculum with an additional 6 ICT rooms for MFL, Design Technology, Humanities, Science, Maths, English and PSHE.  We have completed an extensive Sixth Form Centre development which has resulted in our Sixth Formers having their own dining and toilet facilities and extensive Private Study and Common Room space.
