Cold Environments: Alaska's Developmental Challenges

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unit 1B: In this fourth lesson of the Cold Environments section we look at what the challenges to development are in Alaska.

There is a retrieval practice starter based on the content delivered in the previous lessons. We begin by looking at the distribution of both people and permafrost in Alaska and determining if there may be a link. The students complete a colouring by numbers exercise to create choropleth maps of both and answer questions relating to their maps. We then look at a brief video clip on the problems of melting permafrost. The students complete a sheet on the various challenges in Alaska and shade an icon in according to how big a challenge they think it is and explain why. We then look at adaptations that have been made to buildings. The students annotate a diagram which features a house with several adaptations.

We finish with 6-mark GCSE-style question based on the content of the lesson and the students have some tips and guidance on how to answer it if required. They also have a writing frame.
