A full lesson designed to guide students through an engaging analysis of Alan Jenkins’s Effects, part of the Edexcel A Level English Literature specification (9ET0).

An updated and expanded version of the resource, which includes a comparison activity with Simon Armitage’s About His Person, a comparative essay question with writing frame, and a choice of plenary.

For copyright reasons, About His Person is not provided with the resource, but is widely available online.

The lesson includes:

  • Starter: Students discuss the the dual meanings of ‘effects’ - both as consequences and personal belongings - while examining their relevance to the poem’s themes.
  • Structured Analysis: Students track the gradual unveiling of information in the poem and analyse how Jenkins’s careful pacing impacts the reader’s emotional response. A table is provided for students to complete.
  • Thematic Discussion: Students identify and discuss the poem’s central themes and ideas, including loss, memory, and grief.
  • Imagery Analysis: Students find key quotations associated with pictures and assess the effects of central imagery on the reader.
  • Comparison: A guided activity where students compare the speakers of Effects and About His Person by Simon Armitage.
  • Comparative essay question on the presentation of death with a writing frame.
  • Plenary: A choice between two simple questions, which students can discuss and provide a verbal answer to.
