A-level resource. Fun classroom Saw movie based activity that encourages students to work as a team to solve a series of Hess cycles, enthalpy and entropy calculations to determine the feasibility of a reaction. Its sounds terrible but it is great fun and encourages collaboration and develops key skills in entropy and enthalpy calculations. Uses data values from the Edexcel data booklet and features total entropy change rather than Gibbs energy but could easily be adapted. Students have always thoroughly enjoyed this activity due to the time limit and its a nature allows students to subdivide the task to achieve it within the time. For example, one group may complete the Hess cycle whilst another determines the entropy of the system. Students are involved throughout the entire lesson as seven tasks require completion in total to survive. Also provides excellent support in creating and using Hess cycles to bolster skill in energetics.
