12 differentiated challenge cards freebie, focusing on French ER verbs in the present tense, ideal for KS3 French students, who are really getting to grips with the concept of conjugation, and beginning to work with compound sentences and longer texts. They work well as refresh and revision for KS4 French / GCSE French students too.
This kind of activity really does help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their conjugation skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in French in general, and certainly in conjugating French ER verbs in the present tense in particular.
The questions range in complexity and challenge, and some call upon prior and new knowledge too, helping students make links and build bridges in their learning. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with - these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects, personal pronouns and question formats in French.

12 differentiated question cards 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. The card size allows for more complex sentences, and equally importantly for a font size that is sufficiently large to ensure that language is accessible to students, who are generally at the more initial stages of their French programmes.

These sets are ideal for a range of ***French*** language classrooms from ***KS2 French / Primary French*** to ***KS3 French***, and at ***KS4 French***, students preparing for ***GCSE French*** as practice and revision. I use task not only when we're focusing on the focus language and grammar, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity. The goal is not simply to learn how ***French*** works, and how patterns can be identified and applied, it’s also about enjoying working with ***French***, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions are ***differentiated***, and range in ***complexity and challenge***, with some calling specifically upon prior and new knowledge too, helping students make links and build bridges in their learning. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with - these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other ***grammatical concepts*** are addressed in the questions too, such as ***gender agreement***, ***direct and indirect objects***, ***personal pronouns*** and ***question formats in French***. The ***question card template*** available in some sets enables students to ***apply their knowledge practically and creatively***, which is an essential element to successful language learning. To get the most from the questions, I frequently look at the ***multiple-choice questions*** as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices. ***Identifying errors***, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. ***There are three differentiated recall challenges:*** ***Written Recall Challenge One*** students write the English verbs from a French prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, French-English. ***Written Recall Challenge Two*** again, students write the verbs in English from a French prompt, but the French verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. ***Written Recall Challenge Three*** the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding French verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It's really useful for spelling in French too. I encourage students to visit the ***Ideas, Notes and Next Steps*** page regularly, reflecting not only on the verbs they feel confident about, but also how they think their skills in listening, speaking, pronouncing ***French***, reading and writing are developing - and equally importantly, what they can reasonably do to keep improving. I always have activities where creative application of language is required too, so that they can use the verbs in real-world contexts, which is essential for progressing in language learning. We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision. Students also note down any new, related vocabulary, which builds into a really ***comprehensive high-frequency French verb vocabulary bank*** in a very short space of time. Laminate the game cards if you can - they are far more learner-friendly, and the additional prep and expense is definitely worth it, as the cards will last in excellent conditional for years. Print & photocopy an appropriate number of quiz card templates and Reference, Recall & Write books. The books are best copied double-sided, and double-stapled on the left-hand side, rather than a single staple in the top left-hand corner for example.
