This lesson develops understanding of how digital logic systems drive larger loads. Students learn why logic gates alone can’t power devices beyond LEDs or buzzers, and how transistors, MOSFETs, and comparators act as interfaces between logic outputs and real-world actuators (motors, heaters, solenoids).
Key learning:
Recognise current limits of logic gate outputs
Design and calculate transistor/MOSFET driver circuits
Apply equations for base resistors, current gain (hFE), and MOSFET threshold voltage
Add protection diodes to safeguard switching devices from reverse voltages
Includes:
Worked examples with step-by-step calculations
Exercises on heater and motor driver design
Real-world applications in control systems
