This 50-minute GCSE Chemistry lesson introduces Group 0 (The Noble Gases) in a clear, structured, and SEN-friendly way. Created for low-attaining Year 9 and Year 10 students in an SEN Secondary School.

The lesson focuses on the properties and real-world uses of the noble gases, helping students link chemistry to everyday life.

Starter – Retrieval
Students recall prior learning on displacement reactions before being introduced to Group 0. [person coming along has more ‘rizz’]

Introduction to Noble Gases - Students learn Why Group 0 elements are called noble gases, Their physical properties, Trends in melting and boiling points. Does not include shells.

Quick Check – True or False: Students use thumbs voting to check their understanding of noble gas properties.

Main Activity – Noble Gas Information Hunt: Students move around the room collecting information about uses of Noble Gases in everyday life. Print slides 9 to 13, A3.

Application Task – What Am I?
Students use clues to identify different noble gases and justify their answers using their learning from the lesson.

Application Task – Noble Gas Picture Hunt
Students apply their knowledge by identifying uses of noble gases within a picture. They colour-code examples of helium, argon, neon, krypton and xenon, helping them connect each gas to real-world uses in a visual, SEN-friendly way.

Plenary – Correct the Mistake
Students identify and correct misconceptions about Group 0 elements, providing a final opportunity for retrieval and checking for understanding.

Includes:

  • Fully resourced PowerPoint - worksheets on slide 1 to 3
  • Information hunt activity - slides 9 to 13
  • Multiple checking-for-understanding opportunities
