Children add and subtract near multiples of ten, e.g. 49 and 51 to three-digit numbers by adding/subtracting multiples of ten first and then adjusting. These include additions or subtractions where counting on/back in tens crosses a multiple of 100, e.g. 485 + 39, 326 – 41.
