The next few pages contain melody excerpts be- longing to compositions written in different tonaLities. The excerpts are all around 4 bars long. The idea is that learners create their own melodies by putting excerpts together. All
excerpts are presented as “keyless” with all accidentals being annotated, so to not give away the tonal- ity straight away. This is a beginner compositional activity designed to train the ear to recognize consonance and dissonance as well as to develop interest in composition without necessarily having much background music theory knowledge. All excerpts have a frame around them, so to facilitate cutting and pasting. This would be a particularly useful “hands on approach” to compositional learning, as well as an opportunity for young learners to create Interactive Notebooks and Graphic Organizers.
