Multiplying & dividing whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100, and 1,000 is a key skill taught in Year 5 of the National Curriculum (KS2).
Students get to understand that multiplying by 10, 100, or 1,000 shifts each digit to the left by one, two, or three places respectively, increasing the value of the number. Likewise, dividing by these numbers shifts digits to the right, decreasing the value of the number, in both cases visually supported at the start by place value grids.
This applies to both whole numbers and decimals, reinforcing place value concepts and fluency with decimals and prepares students for further work with decimals, fractions, and percentages ithat will come later.
