Here’s a set of 3 activities I have used with AS students after completion of their AS exams and before their well deserved (?) summer break. I used this with international students doing IAL chemistry (Edexcel) i.e. the modular version, not the linear version that now exists in the UK. Hence, they are probably of more use to teachers at International schools where students still do the one year AS course and then decide if they want to take chemistry any further.

The 3 activities and; Investigation the iodine clock reaction; Analysis of the acidity of vinegars and The preparation/purification of asprin. All of these are of course valid practical activities that ought to be done by A2 students anyway so exposure to the theory and practical skills before starting A2 always seemed like a good idea. The asprin activity is covered by a free resource published by the RSC and is available here http://www.rsc.org/learn-chemistry/content/filerepository/CMP/00/000/045/Aspirin.pdf so there are no additional notes included for that.

Also included is a set of technicians notes and a simple spreadsheet showing typical results for one variable for the clock reaction.

Enjoy
