Egg Drop Device STEM Challenge
A hands‑on STEM challenge where learners design, build, test, and improve a device that protects an egg during a drop. Learners explore forces, impact, cushioning, and simple engineering ideas while creating a solution that keeps the egg safe. The activity encourages curiosity, problem‑solving, and thoughtful testing as learners see how design choices affect the outcome.
Learners build a protective device using simple materials, test it from a safe height, and observe what happens on impact. This low‑prep activity works well for primary classrooms, home learning, STEM tubs, or small‑group centres. It fits easily into short sessions and supports independent or guided exploration.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
• 3‑page STEM Challenge set: Cover Page, Instructions Page, Activity Page
• Built‑in data collection graph for recording test results
• Clear directions for classrooms
• Kid‑friendly layout for independent exploration
• Printable PDF (A4/Letter compatible)
SKILLS DEVELOPED:
• Engineering design process
• Predicting and testing ideas
• Observing impact and protection
• Comparing design changes
• Recording simple data
HOW IT WORKS:
Learners build one version of their egg‑protection device, drop it from a safe height, and observe what happens to the egg. They record results, then change one part of the design—such as cushioning, weight, or structure—and test again. They sketch both versions, note the change, and compare outcomes using the activity page. The open layout supports drawings and observations. Teachers can choose single‑height testing, multiple‑height testing, or quick redesign rounds.
The challenge scales naturally: younger learners create simple protective designs, while older learners explore impact force, weight distribution, and cushioning strategies.
LEARNING CONCEPTS:
• Forces and impact
• Protection and cushioning
• Weight distribution
• Testing and improving designs
Curriculum Links: Supports early engineering and investigations involving impact and protection.
STEM Vocabulary: force, impact, protect, cushion, weight, test, observe, improve
Differentiation: Works well for KS1 learners and naturally extends for KS2.

• Print pages single‑sided
• Provide plastic eggs or real eggs, paper, tape, straws, rubber bands, scissors
• Adult supervision required when dropping eggs and cleaning spills
AGE RANGE:
Suitable for ages 5–11 (Primary).
Aligned for KS1 learners, with natural extension options for KS2.
Supports ESL learners with simple language and hands‑on tasks.
