This lesson explores adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, and converting fractions to decimals through a city designing project full of problems to solve - perfect for developing an understanding of fractions through clear explanations, thought-provoking challenges and real-life scenarios.

Students will problem solve with fractions, mixed numbers and decimals in relation to Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11): Sustainable Cities and Communities and Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6): Clean Water and Sanitation. Students will be introduced to sponge cities and create their own through choosing their own features and designing a specific street. Afterwards, they will need to overcome various problems by applying their understanding of adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, as well as converting fractions to decimals.

Fractions & Mixed Numbers | Whole Unit | Lesson Notes, Slides & Activities

This purposeful unit for **fractions and mixed numbers** includes 6 lessons, and embeds real life scenarios and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) throughout: **Lesson 1** - explores how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators by using common multiples. **Lesson 2** - focuses on how, when and why to add mixed numbers with the same and different denominators **Lesson 3** - identifies how, when and why to subtract mixed numbers with the same and different denominators. **Lesson 4** - provides a platform for your students to apply their understanding of adding and subtracting mixed numbers through a range of problems to solve. **Lesson 5** - investigates the relationship between fractions and division, and how to convert any fraction to a decimal through this lens. **Lesson 6** - gives students the opportunity to apply their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP) to interpret data related to the sustainable development goal of ending poverty (SDG 1). **Knowledge:** - I know that I cannot add or subtract fractions unless the parts (denominators) are the same size. - I know that a mixed number is a whole number and a fraction joined together. - I know that an improper fraction is a way of showing more than one whole. Skills: - I can find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) to create common denominators for any two fractions. - I can add and subtract mixed numbers by keeping the wholes and parts separate or by converting them. - I can break a whole (regroup) to help me subtract a large fraction from a smaller one. **What’s Included?** Your download includes everything you need for a successful series of lessons: **Unit Overview Notes:** Outlines the knowledge, skills, and pre-requisites for the entire unit, exploring the question 'How do we combine un-equal parts?' **Detailed Lesson Walkthrough/Notes:** Includes a step-by-step guide with guiding questions and key discussion points for each lesson. **Guiding Questions:** Great opportunities for AfL throughout each lesson, designed to help your students draw on their previous learning and make purposeful connections across the unit. **Lesson Slides:** Engaging slides to guide each of your lessons. **Lesson Activities:** Includes accessible, low-floor high ceiling activities for each lesson that all students can access through adaptive teaching, leading to improved confidence.
