This will probably take 2 lessons. This lesson has 5 questions (+-x/) can be projected on the board to get the students focused. There is an embedded video starter of a spinning woman, the students have to get the woman to rotate clockwise and anticlockwise, they find this very difficult but it will happen if they can focus as it uses different sides of the brain. There is a matching activity where students come up to the board and match the expressions to their word equivalents. You then introduce re-arranging equations with a video of a harrier jump jet crash, you can ask what is different about this plane, how much is it, what happens to the pilot? It may seem odd but the students like it and there are discussion point on the slide to introduce the importance of algebra.
On the next few slides there are numbers that are added subtracted and multiplied and as you physically move them from one side of the equal sign to the other the signs change as you move them some times this display helps the less able to remember what to do. At the end of this is an equation and you can again physically move the equation about and the signs change with it, the students like this and will try and work out how you do it, but it does make it memorable. After this there are lots of graded questions with an extension of introducing fractional equations up to a grade B.
