The lesson gives pupils plenty of opportunity to master the fluency of solving linear equations with an unknown on one side. There are also plenty of reasoning and problem solving tasks to really stretch the more able pupils. The lesson then has a separate differentiated section for algebra in shape in which they must form and solve equations. Plenty of stretch and challenge but loads of opportunities to master the skill.
All tasks are differentiated to at least 3 levels. There are reasoning and problem solving tasks which are suitable for the new curriculum. All tasks have solutions so that it is easy for the pupils to mark their work. This has been used and allowed pupils to master the skill and for the more able to develop their understanding. Used with a top set and second set year 7 and lots of challenge with plenty of engagement.
