works brilliantly for YEAR 9/GRADE 10 French because it feels more like a game than speaking practice.
How to Run The Game:
Give students ridiculous “would you rather” style dilemmas designed to split the class evenly.
Students move to one side of the room or the other.
Then:
- count sides
- debate choices
- defend answers in French
The fun comes from impossible or chaotic choices.
Round 1: Easy/Funny
Get everyone comfortable.
Examples:
- Tu préfères… ou… ?
Round 2: Chaos
This is where it becomes “Split the Room.”
Examples:
- Tu préfères avoir 1% de batterie pour toujours ou un Wi-Fi très lent ?
Round 3: Student-Made Questions
This is usually the best part.
In pairs:
- students invent their own ridiculous dilemmas in French
- they try to split the class exactly in half
- You then play them live.
The Competitive element?
- 1 point if the room splits nearly 50/50
That makes them think strategically and gets loads of engagement.
Extra Twist: Secret Voting
If your class is shy:
- students stand with eyes closed and point
- or use mini whiteboards
- or use tech/forms if allowed
Then reveal the split dramatically.
