The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the significance of the Truman Doctrine and examine how it increased tensions between the USA and the Soviet Union at the start of the Cold War.
Students begin by analysing two political cartoons from the period to explore how and why the USA’s policy of containment challenged the Soviet Union. Guidance is provided where needed to help students interpret the cartoons and understand the messages they convey.
Students then examine the details of the Truman Doctrine and the reasons behind America’s new foreign policy. They consider the consequences for Europe and how the policy contributed to growing superpower rivalry and Cold War tensions.
The lesson includes a GCSE exam practice question on the significance of the Truman Doctrine. Students are supported with guidance and a model answer to help them develop their explanations and understand how to reach the higher mark levels.
The lesson is enquiry based, with a key question using a lightbulb posed at the start and revisited throughout this and subsequent lessons to show the progress of learning.
The resource includes retrieval practice, suggested teaching strategies, differentiated materials and GCSE question practice.
It also comes in PowerPoint format if there is a wish to adapt and change.
