VIPERS Reading Framework – Practical KS1–KS2 Teacher Toolkit

A practical, ready-to-use teacher toolkit for teaching reading comprehension through the VIPERS framework: Vocabulary, Infer, Predict, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise. Designed for use across KS1 and KS2, the resource gives teachers a clear structure for developing pupils’ comprehension using fiction and non-fiction texts across the curriculum.

The toolkit explains each of the six VIPERS skills and links them to the KS2 National Curriculum reading content domains, with ready-to-use question stems and practical teaching guidance. It includes dedicated sections for Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval and Summarise, helping teachers move beyond simply asking comprehension questions towards explicitly teaching the skills pupils need.

Also included are KS1 and KS2 worked examples, guidance for differentiating questions from Developing through Expected to Greater Depth, printable KS1 and KS2 reading worksheets, a weekly VIPERS planning grid and a printable classroom display/poster.

The framework can be used for whole-class guided reading, small-group work, spoken discussion, written comprehension, reading journals and independent reading. Teachers can focus on one or two skills in depth during a session while building balanced coverage across the week.

Ideal for: KS1 and KS2 teachers • Guided Reading • Reading Comprehension • VIPERS • SATs preparation • English CPD • Whole-school reading development • Classroom displays and planning
