Winter multiplication crafts for Grades 3-4 (Years 4-5): pupils split an array to use the distributive property, then cut and glue a snowman, penguin, polar bear, arctic fox or yeti.
A hands-on times tables activity that ends with a cheerful winter display.
What is included
- 10 black and white pages: 5 characters, 2 pages each
- Page 1 of each character: head and body with a dot array and a My Multiplication box (rows x columns)
- Page 2: arms holding Left Part and Right Part cards, feet, and a Put It Together base: (__ x ) + ( x __) = __
- Arrays: snowman 4 x 7, penguin 5 x 8, polar bear 6 x 9, arctic fox 4 x 8, yeti 5 x 6. Several column splits are correct, so pupils can compare strategies
How it works
Pupils write the multiplication for the whole array, split the columns into two groups and colour each group differently, write the two smaller facts, add the parts, then cut out the five pieces and glue them on with the tabs.
Ways to use
- Introduce or practise the distributive property with arrays
- Maths centres in December and January
- Differentiation: give the smaller arrays to pupils who need support
- A winter maths display for the classroom or hallway
