This is the longer pen and paper method for subtraction. Based on the same principle as a number line but the calculation is set out in columns. First you add to the units of the smaller number to round it up to the next multiple of 10 then add any 10s on to get to the nearest 100. Carrying on across the digits you will end up with a column that once added together will give the total needed to get to the target number. The worksheet shows it much clearer than I have explained it here!
