Assuming pupils can already read rhythms, this starts them out thinking of Q and A rhythms as a starting point for teir composition. They would then add in chords and use the notes of the chords. I just used a written out sheet with this presentation, so just write out simple ne bar rhythms with space for tem to add a second bar.
