In this lesson plan you will find the steps to introduce your students to the topic of Human Rights in an interactive way through videos, small group discussions, a quiz and the news. All these activities will prepare students to perform a class discussion about one of the two topics of discussion presented in the plan according to their age and linguistic level. Learning objectives: To introduce the topic of Human Rights. To prepare students for a discussion about Human Rights offering specific content and language input. To develop critical thinking skills by giving opinions supported by evidence. To raise students’ awareness of their own rights. The topic of this unit is Children and teenagers’ rights. The main objective is to foster students’ critical and creative thinking to solve a problem that affects them. The unit is designed for a five-lesson period, though changes can be done as necessary. Along with the lesson plan, you will find four worksheets: a summary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child with comprehension and discussion questions; a piece of worksheet showing an example about how to solve a problem; a piece of worksheet with steps to arrive at a solution; a piece of worksheet where the thinking strategy ‘Six hats’ (de Bono) is used to guide students in their search for a good solution to the problem.
