Number Hats Representing 1 - 10 in different ways for Foundation Phase These number hats will add lots of fun when learning about numbers 1 to 10. There are 10 number hats included. No prep needed! Print-friendly, black ink pdf download. Each student will need: From the pdf: 1 hat page 1 matching band page (you may prefer to choose which bands they use) Also need: colouring crayons/pencils etc scissors glue or sticky tape Represent numbers 1 - 10 in different ways including: Ten frame tally bead strings place value cubes number line Number word Digit Students also have an opportunity to develop their fine motor skills when cutting out the hat carefully following the dotted line. The hats are very easy to put together and your students assemble almost the entire hat on their own! All you need to do is glue or tape the bands together. You may want to choose which band they use. There is a choice of 2 band designs: trace on handwriting lines bold outline to colour or trace Suggested activities with the completed hats: Practise number bonds of 10. Students find someone who has the associated fact. e.g. if they are wearing a ‘8 hat’ they would need to find someone wearing a ‘2 hat’. They could prove that they have found the correct partner by using one of the concrete resources shown on the hat and making what they can see on their partners hat. When they put them together, they should make 10. They would then go to a student who is wearing a 10 hat to check that they are bonds of 10. Students could sort themselves into groups according to their teachers instructions. e.g. smallest to largest, largest to smallest, odds and evens, … It can also be interesting to allow students to come up with their own games!

The first factor indicates how many times to perform this addition. Skip Counting: Skip counting is counting by the second factor, where the first factor tells us how many skips to make as we count.
