These are resources I’ve used during my Year 9 half term topic on Film Music. Included are 5 scenes from popular films (Avatar, James Bond, Cabin in the Woods, Mr Bean and The Notebook) which students then storyboard on the worksheet provided. I’ve also included my PowerPoint on famous film composers and the bronze, silver and gold challenge sheet music. This document contains 8 tunes that students will need to guess by working out the treble clef notes and then playing it on their keyboard. I print these out and stick them around the classroom and students go to each station to guess the tune, which will either be from a film or a familiar song - works well as a competition and students really enjoy the challenge of unlocking them faster than their friends! In lockdown, these phrases can be copied and pasted into a format of your choosing so students can practice their notation reading skills. Also attached is a worksheet for students take around with them. This is a practical resource meant for keyboard. It uses London’s burning to explore monophonic, homophonic and polyphonic textures. I use this for my Year 7 classes and allows for differentiation i.e. lower ability take the monophonic version and play in octaves, middle ability takes the homophonic and introduces chords and higher ability takes polyphonic. Letters of notes haven’t been written in to add an element of notation reading as a starter but you can easily add this yourself and then photocopy! Enjoy!

A stand alone lesson based around the theme of Halloween. It includes a PowerPoint presentation that covers basic staples of horror music, audio clips for a quick ‘guess the film’ round, sheet music with accompanying birdseye videos and performance objectives. Also included is a worksheet that includes basic piano music for The Exorcist, Halloween and Saw. Please note that there are no actual film clips and all pictures are carefully chosen from film posters so material should not be inappropriate for KS3 but please use your discretion.

These are 8 - 10 bar excerpts from each of the seasons by Vivaldi for easy piano. The majority of notes are written in but as part of the task, I ask students to label clefs, time signatures, dynamic markings and write in missing pitches before sticking this in their books. Suitable for basic music analysis with KS3 and for a short performance task as part of exploring Baroque music. It’s a Word document format so it can be printed or edited to suit.

This PowerPoint can be edited to fit any subject or project - I’ve personally used it for GCSE and A-Level Music set-work revision and had great feedback from students, especially when you use the Millionaire tension music on YouTube in the background.

This is a first person view of how to play the leitmotif and three of the James Bond themes on piano. This was filmed for my current Year 8 classes who are studying film music and it helps students learn which direction to play the notes in and particularly helps visual learners.

This resource contains a first-person video of how to play the pedal note section of Bach’s Toccata In D Minor and a copy of the sheet music. I’m using this to help Year 9 students learn about tonality and minor scales; it also links neatly into modes. It also provides a good example of pedal notes and helps students remember names and places of notes on the keyboard. Enjoy!
